Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Let the hating of me begin...

ImageUploadedByTalkBass1410062380.850411.jpg

1966 Ampeg B-15N

Pristine condition, even came with the original dolly and vinyl cover.

It keeps blowing fuses, but my friend who works on amps is gonna take a look at it for me tomorrow, so it should be up and running soon.

The main reason to hate me...

$550 is what I paid for it.

Is be all over that if I was a hair closer :) plus in a sucker for white

String question..
Fender American Standard jazz, GHS Boomers, DR Hi Beams, or D'Addario nickel wounds?

Hi-Beams have a lot of top end grind. I like them on my vintage Rics that have lost some of the treble attack. For a warmer nickel sound I like nickel lo-riders, or R. Coccos on my Js. I never liked d'addario strings, I find them too stiff.

I hate everything GHS. Don't like the sound, feel and their quality sucks. Poor intonation, dead strings in new packs and they break easily.

I haven't played a lot of strings, but I liked the helix Dean Markley strings. I've had them for about 7 months now. Still sounding good.

Of what you listed, I'm a DR fan. Never tried hi beams, though. In Sam's recommendation, I got loriders and liked them a lot. Only reason I tried the markleys, was the instant savings from bass strings online. It was $8 off. I should have bought two sets. Anyways, I need new strings. Thinking of just going web strings cause I'm still pretty money tight.

I hope you get the amp sorted. Great steal. Those babies are Motown thump machines. Tone city! Run a p bass through it. Sexy, sexy tone.

Here's the el cheapo Warlock...

...the color's more "smoker's teeth yellow" than "faded white/cream." It's in need of a setup, some new strings and cleaned pots. Maybe a new bridge, too. All that aside, the neck's not too shabby and it's featherlight. Not a bad way to waste $50.

Here's the rig from tonight's gig...

Was supposed to go out drinking with my old drummer tonight, spent about an hour at a local bar, he got a text from a lady friend and split. I can't blame the guy, but i had just hit that 5th beer zone where you just want to keep having fun. Now I'm home, wife is asleep and I'm having a beer on the porch with the cat. Kind of a bummer.

congrats on the warlock, high beams are great, but i took the off of my sb-2 due to concerns over fret preservation, ended up at the red lion tavern having drinks for my friend scott's birthday and i met the really nice and cool singer of 400 blows and talked to him for about 45 minutes about music and art, i got asked to play bass in a christian death style goth band, two of my friends got kicked out of the bar one for grabbing a bottle of vodka from behind the bar and drinking out of it and the other for an undisclosed reason, there were some invites for after hours stuff, but i can barely stay up past 10:30 nowadays, so i'm back here typing away after walking my dogs and trying to rehydrate

also if you play a 50 dollar bass into a 2000 dollar head you are my hero
