Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Goddammit @Sartori I don't want to quote your novella to talk about something in the middle....

Also a bit of a fantasy nerd. Seems to be common 'round here.

I'll put a second vote behind Christopher Moore, that son-of-a-bitch is very very funny. A Dirty Job is probably my favorite of his with Practical Demon Keeping being up there with it and Fool too. Lamb is great as well. My wife and I have probably all his books and have enjoyed reading them several times.

R.A.Salvatore is really good for accessible fantasy. I enjoyed the Icewind Dale trilogy. My favorite of his is
The Woods Out Back is kind of his tribute to Tolkien. Probably as good as anything he wrote for TSR but IMO has more spirit behind it.

Last I'll recommend a series that is stupid hard to find but easily one of my favorites: Simon Hawk's Dark Sun: Tribe of One series. Its fantasy setting is TSR's short-lived Dark Sun world on a barren-planet with a dying sun. The main character has multiple personalities that each fall into their own character class. So the protagonist is a Ranger but in his head is a Fighter, a Mage, etc. Its better than my description seems to make it sound.

@Sartori I'll have to dig into those others you recommended.
There are a couple local in-jokes with the stuff by Moore that's set in SF, too, so additional appeal for me. Haven't read all of his stuff, but everything I've read by him, I've loved.

The Tribe of One series sounds interesting.

Yeah. I need to like book mark these literary suggestions. J like reading about ancient occult, including wizards, knights, etc. I have a hard time with stories that have a **** ton of characters. I feel like I have to take notes...
Hmmm... see, Malazan is very ancient occult in some ways (the time scale parts of it are on is ridiculous, and there are a plethora of active gods, of which the Death god is one of the least douchebaggy, and all sorts of weird-ass sorcery).... but it also has a shagload of characters. I mean, they're listed at the front, but it's still goddamn confusing at first.

I should have it in my mitts in about an hour....
?

So y'all like B.C.Rich's?

Ooh, reverse P.

String question..
Fender American Standard jazz, GHS Boomers, DR Hi Beams, or D'Addario nickel wounds?
Anything but the GHS.

I like regular old D'Addario nickel rounds, myself.

Let the hating of me begin...

1966 Ampeg B-15N

Pristine condition, even came with the original dolly and vinyl cover.

It keeps blowing fuses, but my friend who works on amps is gonna take a look at it for me tomorrow, so it should be up and running soon.

The main reason to hate me...

$550 is what I paid for it.
Dude, that's amazing.

Hi-Beams have a lot of top end grind. I like them on my vintage Rics that have lost some of the treble attack. For a warmer nickel sound I like nickel lo-riders, or R. Coccos on my Js. I never liked d'addario strings, I find them too stiff.

I hate everything GHS. Don't like the sound, feel and their quality sucks. Poor intonation, dead strings in new packs and they break easily.
Agreed so completely on GHS.

Never played a Ric, but if one had a jazz bass profile, I'd rock it. I like how rics look. They weren't on my radar when I had money. I also gas for a Fenderbird.
Eh, the profile on Rickenbacker necks varies, but one thing that reminds relatively consistent is that they have much less taper from body to nut than a jazz bass. Their necks are wider than a jazz bass's at the nut, but narrower than a jazz bass's at the body end.

congrats on the warlock, high beams are great, but i took the off of my sb-2 due to concerns over fret preservation, ended up at the red lion tavern having drinks for my friend scott's birthday and i met the really nice and cool singer of 400 blows and talked to him for about 45 minutes about music and art, i got asked to play bass in a christian death style goth band, two of my friends got kicked out of the bar one for grabbing a bottle of vodka from behind the bar and drinking out of it and the other for an undisclosed reason, there were some invites for after hours stuff, but i can barely stay up past 10:30 nowadays, so i'm back here typing away after walking my dogs and trying to rehydrate

also if you play a 50 dollar bass into a 2000 dollar head you are my hero
Would be even better than my playing a $150 bass through an $800 amp. :p

Sweet score Ron and Matthew!

Finished the 412 into 218 tonight...but when I went to load in the speakers, I realized I measured wrong and cut the holes way too big so I had to improvise and made what I'm now calling "cresent moon ports", so it's not sealed anymore, but it still sounds great! Its good to have 4 forward facing 18s, now I need to get my BW fixed or buy a new one and ill run 518s and 210s, fvck yeah. My 800 Booster fits perfectly on it, so that's an aesthetic plus too.

Had a GH practice afterwards, got both songs done and now it's just getting them perfect, we're in great shape for our first show on the 19th. It'll be cool to pull double duty.

It's now a ported cab. If it sounds sweet you may need to make another motor board and drop a couple ports in this beast.

I had a neat experience but felt the need to overshare...
Dude I get what your doing. The exploration can be fun, but posting it on the internet is a bad idea. Especially information regarding location.
For all your college education you seem to lack some serious common sense.

Obviously none of the regulars who post here will turn you in or even care, but Talkbass is a public forum searchable with Google.

Please think kid. I'm not trying to slam you, quite the opposite really. In the past I did allot of very similar things. Just have fun and try and not implicate yourself.

Yeah, I'll plus one this statement. There's a really nice little nature preserve on the edge of town that is not visited often - i go there quite a bit. It's obvious to me that some local high school kids smoke pot there, because they've written their full names, high school, graduating class and dozens of obvious references to drugs on every possible surface.

What you're doing isn't quite as bad as that obviously, but I'd exercise caution when posting stuff like that. You never know what's going to come back and bite you on the ass.
