Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Drummer I'm supposed to be jamming with on Sunday just sent me an email, letting me know he found another guitarist who is really into Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky and Nothing and asking if I'd be down to go in that direction instead. *sigh*

Fellow doom amigos. As some of you know, since my stage volume issues at my last show I have been on a quest for a rig of more. I picked up a USA 4 Pro at a steal of a deal and have shifted toward cabinetry. I know the stock(for good reason) response for a cab to match this head is the 810e. My feeling on the 810e are this, I have previously owned a 410he and I was really not super pleased with its tone. It lacked the ass. I know that the 810e has much more low end than the 410he, but I am hesitant to go with another sealed cab. Because of this I am investigating other options; the 810e is not out of the question though. I am talking with a TBer about buying his Aguilar DB810. Do you guys think this is a good idea? Has anyone used one of these cabs in this context? I have heard that they are like an 810e on steroids, but have also heard that 810es are some of the more underrated (in terms of power handling) cabs. Funds are somewhat limited and all of the local used 810es I have tried to seek out have been owned by CL BSers and flakes.

I am just really torn about cabinets. What I currently have at my disposal are 2 x Acoustic 115s and one Avatar 115. Maybe I should grab another 15, run 2 15s on each side of the amp and save some money, or maybe I should grab this 810 and run it bridged, or on one side with the 215s on the other. Maybe I should do both and run the 810 on one side and 415s (2 ohm load) on the other side and biamp or dual mono?

Stay dark. Stay sinful.
If you got an svt 4 pro, don't feel constrained that you have to get an 8x10. You can run anything you want with that amp. If you like Aguilar I heard the db 4x12 is cool, but that's gonna be hard to find cheap.

It's not that I feel constrained to an 810 because I am using a 4 pro. I feel constrained because I am up against two guitar players who either run two wide open 100-150W tube heads into full stacks or four 100-150W tube heads with a half stack under each. I mainly need volume and TB has taught me more speakers = more loud. With my budget and income level as it stands I can currently only afford one big cab or maybe two smaller 15s. I have also always dug the feeling I get playing through an 810.

With 810s in mind, the crux of the matter is this. All of the local CL 810 ads are bunch of poo. I posted a thread earlier about a guy asking $1350 for a refinished 70s Ampeg 810 box with four original and four replacement speakers. It is a great example of what STL local CL has to offer. There is another ad for a GK Neo 412 but he wants $800 for it. Now, I have a line on NIB MIA 810e cabs, but I will pay at least what I will pay for this Aguilar. I have never played one, but the Aguilar does seem like it could handle the 4 pro and get super loud, while also maintaining some of the lower frequencies related to drop Bb. So I pose the question to the maestros of the TB S/D thread: Have any of you/do any of you use the Aguilar DB 810? How do you feel this cab will perform within the context of stoner/doom metal?

In all likelihood I will end up picking up the Aggy unless financial tragedy strikes, the guy with the GK tastes the reality of his cabs value, or a decent used SVT 810e pops up for a reasonable price. I need to acquire something in the next month before our next show.

I appreciate the feedback.

When you talk about 810's and the what's better what's worse it's all a matter of personal taste. I know the '73 flat back I have seems a bit louder since it has a more upper mid presence with the cts drivers, but the cab only handles like 240w. Most people that like a particular 610 or 810 is better then a 810e are probably comparing it to a slm made 810E which is know to sound dark. I for one love my booger wood slm cabs. I actually own two different era, one is like 1996 and one is 2000. The 1996 has better speakers (stock) and is slightly brighter then the 2000 cab. Know that if it's made by slm chances are it will be slightly dark and made of mfd. So by most "standards" other "high end" company's will have better boxes and less dark speakers. But if a cab has a horn I (IMHO) think it's flawed and can't sound naturally bright/full without aid of the horn. To note the loud tech made 810e is plywood and has new/better drivers (by most peoples feedback). If I was you I would get a phone app or use a Craig's list search engine to find a cab that's within decent driving distance. I bought my second 810 in Chicago which is a 2hr drive from here in Iowa. And that cab cost $350 worth the gas and tolls, sure. Wife went with and made a day of it.

The Aguilar is actually an hour closer to me than Chitown. I do have the CL app and actively use the search engine, but extending the search to include Chicago is a smart call. Ill check it out.

I wonder why the DB cabs aren't more popular. The few reviews I have found were glowing. I guess it just has a high price tag for a new 810.

It is the DB 810. I have also read a bunch of excellent reviews of the DB412 and the GS 412, but unfortunately those cabs new are out of the PR. It has a horn and is ported. According to spec it can produce and SPL of 136 db. Most of the complaints have been in regard to the weight. I am a strapping young lad who mixes several hundred pounds of dough every day, I can handle the weight. And I have access to a truck whenever I need it to move the beast, so the size isn't really an issue for me.

I am sure it has been asked and answered ad nauseum, but how does a 412 compare to an 810 in terms of sheer loud?

Sorry I ment the GS412I remember the DB series is supposed to be very scooped sounding to they'd. The GS I played was pretty loud loud but that was in store so....

Edit:
If it was me I would pass on the db810 and buy just about any ampeg. Got a peavey tx810 that just popped up in town for $200 :) profile says your from st Louis, if your willing to drive to chi I can imagine you can find one closer.

Best show yet. Jex Thoth was spectacular per usual. ATW was down right amazing and Windhand left my soul in pieces.

Without VEGA Vision...

The GS are the "modern sound" scooped ones. The DB are the vintage sound with "punchy midrange". I have a GS 4x10, and would trade it for a DB if I could.

Yeah, all passives for me. I just don't find myself liking actives. Too much to mess up. I prefer not to have too many EQs going on at once.

My problem with passives is they somehow sound sterile to me. I've heard them sound great in other people's hands, for all kinds of music. But whenever I've messed with 'em (and I've owned a couple) they just seem somehow characterless.

If anyone here is old enough to remember cassette days, I've always used tape Dolby as a corollary for active basses. Hated Dolby...it removed a little hiss but it also cut off the high end (cymbals would get lost) and kind of compressed the sound into a can.

Active basses sound to my ears like flipping on the Dolby.
