My problem with passives is they somehow sound sterile to me. I've heard them sound great in other people's hands, for all kinds of music. But whenever I've messed with 'em (and I've owned a couple) they just seem somehow characterless.

If anyone here is old enough to remember cassette days, I've always used tape Dolby as a corollary for active basses. Hated Dolby...it removed a little hiss but it also cut off the high end (cymbals would get lost) and kind of compressed the sound into a can.

Active basses sound to my ears like flipping on the Dolby.

Yeah, see, I've always heard more character in passives. Except for MusicMan basses, which I kinda like the sound of, even though they're active.

I don't want an EQ on my bass, really, though, because I have one on my amp already. Two, even. And I'd prefer one that was useful and did everything I wanted it to do instead of having one that has extremely limited use that I have to use the other to do some things with.

Well i put a set of ghs rounds on the ric to replace the questionable xl's and...

-More tension, a bonus for me
-Louder strings, also a plus
-Darker new then the worn xl's, found that kinda weird.
They feel slightly ruff, non issue as of yet

Needed a swap since I feared a string break but almost a wash tonally. I'll make up for it with the EQ on the amp so no biggie. Think I might break down and order circle k's next string change.

The darker aspect was what I really hated about GHS strings. Not obnoxious enough for me.

V-type is a Trace Elliott preamp. There's talk that it's an Alembic F1 copy, but they're all just riffing on the FMV tonestack.
Should be mostly clean tones and very classic.
If you really want to do this get you a Peavey IPR or Crest Prolite poweramp. The old Crest CA series are also good. Any of these poweramps are easy to drive with a variety of preamps. F#ck Crown. Too hard to drive.

Hell, any other experience you may have with preamps would be helpful. Or preamps to keep an eye out for that are decent or popular.

Howdy fellas. Busy Saturday so far: housework, crock pot full of beef stew, trip to a couple of thrift shops (got a new cd player), a few hours of homework, now I'm going to play bass for a bit then meet up with a coworker for some birthday celebration drinking.

So my guitarist surprised me today, we were talking about our show in Madison next weekend and how the stage is pretty small. He said he thinks he's only going to bring two half stacks, his new block letter 5150 combo and his Supernova/Peavey half stack.

This got me thinking, what an I'm gonna run for a half rig...Im thinking I may try bi anping with my 218+210. Run the Vulcan through the 10s for mids and highs and the Dunwich/800 Booster through the 18s for the lows.

I'm bringing all 418s to use with Galactic Hatchet though.

I just plugged the 70s Lotus LP into the Rat into the LH1000 + 2x15s. Wow.
I'm really, really glad i didn't sell that rat. It's hands down the best guitar dirt I've ever had. Really thick, lots of interesting harmonic content. The bias
Bass rig sounds surprisingly good too. LOUD with crazy sustain. I'm pretty pumped.

Fire alarm just went off at work. Man, that sh*t is loud.
I was out back smoking wondering where that alarm was coming from. Oh... my building. Called the management to see if there are supposed to be any tests. Their office is closed. haha. Fire Truck showed up I told them I had no idea what was going on. They checked the building out, reset the alarm and said everything is cool.

99% of commercial fire alarms.

I'm really, really glad i didn't sell that rat. It's hands down the best guitar dirt I've ever had.

I am hopefully gonna take possession of a late-70s Lotus P-bass soon. It's heavier than gawd but I dig it.

And yeah, Rats are killer. I've had several and they seem to vary in sound from era to era, but overall I don't know if they can be beat.

Man, I know everyone loves them, but I've seen Black Cobra twice now and I still am not sure what everyone loves so much about them. I'm not saying they're bad or anything, because they're not... but I can't get excited about them. The kind of riffs they have, I kinda nod my head, but also keep thinking of how much heavier they'd sound with a bassist.

I've seen them live a few years back when they supported Weedeater. It was pretty underwhelming, really. I mean it was heavy and pretty good, but turned out it's just not for me.

If I was going to do the doom two piece thing, I wouldn't bother with a guitar at all. To me, doom is at least partly about low end.

I'd use maybe a Bass VI type instrument, or, more likely, an overdriven 8 or 12 string bass, with a bunch of signal splitting.

Cool. Yeah, this bass I'm looking at is definitely plywood. But you know, I've owned a few plywood guitars (and maybe a plywood bass or two) over the years and I really got no problem with them. They've all been at least decent and some were really killer.

I wouldn't call them doom but both OM and Big Business are heavy bass/drum two pieces that churn up some interesting brew.
