Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Brought this little feller home today. 100W from a quartet of EL34s. Clean as whistle inside. Needs tubes, an input transformer and a little rewiring to make a hi-z input but the boss is going to help with that. Pretty ****ing excited!

So I think I'm going to build a headshell for the Altec amp. The control panel is on what would normally be the "bottom" of the amp. It was designed that way so it could be serviced without pulling it from the rack (though if you had to get at the tubes you'd need to pull it). So, a nice headshell, maybe with an extra 1RU space below the amp so I can stick a preamp in there. 100W probably won't cut it for low-tuned bass so I'm thinking about a tube guitar preamp - maybe a Peavey rockmaster. Or maybe an Alpha bass pre. I think before I hunt one of those down I'm going to pick up an ART Tube MP just to get it up and running and see how it sounds.

Thanks man, I appreciate the compliment. I'm thinking about a couple different approaches to doing a solo album. I may take 3 of the songs I've already written and work them into a demo, I just need to go back and work on the arrangement for a couple of them, since they're all first drafts of song ideas. I was talking to my brother recently about having him write some lyrics and recording vocals for those. I may just hire a drummer for session work to record something for that, maybe even just get one of those online e-drum session players to record me something and still use Superior Drummer for it, depending on what I can afford. I'm also starting to think about options for a true solo project. Something I could do on stage with just me, several rigs and a PA, maybe with precorded backing tracks or something a bit more weird that can support not having a live drummer and/or guitars. That's not really my first choice for music, I like full bands, but I do really want to get out and start playing gigs again.
Listened to the CD this a.m. Sounds great, Max! You guys captured a great live room sound.

Found a little writeup about that Altec power amp:
"Provides 80 watts of power under conditions of varying line voltage, changing tube characteristics and long unloaded speaker lines of high capacitance. Part of the “Building Block 1500 Series” which provide fully integrated public address facilities.
The straight-forward circuitry of the amplifier provides unusual reliability. It is possible for as many as three power tubes and one rectifier tube to fail without removing the amplifier from service. It will withstand “hot switching” and other punishment, which the amplifier may be given by non-technical operators.
The amplifier will accomodate output loads of 4, 8, 16 and 62 ohms: The corresponding output voltages being 18, 25, 36 and 70 volts. The great stability of the circuit makes it possible for two of these amplifiers to be paralleled both at input and output.
the 1569A amplifier can be mounted in either the standard Relay Rack, or in a standard wall or table type cabinet. When used with associated components of sufficient quality to realize its full potentialities, the 1569A is ideal for higher powered public address, paging, music distribution and sound reinforcement systems."
