Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

A few months ago I had another local band seek me out to potentially join their group. They are the ones that gig a ton. I learned a set of their material, went out to a gig, and sat in with them with no rehearsal. They all liked what I did, and said that I was a good fit.

No follow up, and no response to my emails. They have not added a bass player, and still gig.

Musicians are just flakes.

This is why I haven't been reporting much on the band search lately. All the flake outs lately have been bands responding to MY ad (by email or sometimes phone), getting really excited about setting up a jam, then just never doing it. That or I just get an email saying they're looking for a bassist, I respond and ask when we can get together and/or if they have any songs I can check out and they just never get back to me.

Yea, hopefully someone dredges up.

An assumption I'm going to make is that most of us who play know at least one other musician on friend terms. So there is also the possibility these flakes just started stuff with friends.

Another bigggg possibility is most people are drunk/stoned/high/bored and responding to a number of ads then later just ignoring replies as people on craigslist seem to do when a simple never mind I can't would simplify things.

If only I could draw on friends to do a band. The only problem with that for me is that most of my musician friends aren't into stoner rock/metal, doom or sludge. I've never known many people who are. Those who have gotten into it, they all have full time bands already and if I jam with them it ends up being a low priority side project. I have a few friends who are into the music and don't have other bands and they all seem to be super flaky in general or have some kind of personal hangup where they say they want to play music and just never do it. I need to alter my approach and do some different things, for sure, but this area really is terrible for musicians. That's why I've been looking in the Santa Cruz and SF areas for people and willing to travel, but it hasn't panned out so far.

I sold my first Catalinbread SFT because I liked the SGFX Beta Bass for low grit and the rat clone Hellcat for higher gain. Then I got a trade for another SFT. The first one I had was a real early version, then the second one I got in trade looks like the second graphics generation, the Ampeg Tolex looks but not the newest Ampeg faceplate graphic. Anyway it seems to have more gain than the first one. Was going to flip it but think it will stay sammiched between the Beta and the Hellcat, so it can get slap and tickled by the Beta and Hellcat. Oh and yep the dog bloody puke from eating a dead animal ruined my Akai Headrush, one of my favorite pedals and the least favorite dog out of 7 we have, little effer. Got another Headrush in trade but really wanted to have two, one for looping and one for delay. Wish you could trade old grumpy beagle mix dogs for pedals LOL.

Btw... any of you guys want a w&c tall font? I used to have one with a clean blend and sold it. Ive missed it ever since so I picked up a regular one and immediately remembered that I sold it because its redundant with all my other fuzzes. It sounds killer but I already have 3 other fuzzes on my board set to each of the sounds I coax from the tall font. Im dumb.

Otherwise, I'm gonna list it soon.

are you still runnining the OxFuzz?

not really.. I was using that as mostly an OD. Ive kinda moved to the Darkglass Vintage for that.. ... but honestly, Im not using ANY effects live anymore. Ive been just using the 300pro and the footswitch for all my fuzz/od/tone needs. Im just using the fuzzes at home.

That Oxfuzz looks interesting. I would like one or two more non-muff fuzzes. I wonder how this Wilson Effects Fuzz is on bass. Tweaked tone bender. Like to try an EQD Dirt Transmitter out sometime too.
