I feel like I'm there now, I've been getting pretty grumpy lately. Mostly because I haven't played any loud music in soooo long, I'm not getting my sub sonic cellular massage therapy. I just had a conversation over burritos with a friend about this yesterday. He was adamant that I'm just freaking everyone out by being slightly organized and that they're all lazy and only want to play music if it's no work at all, but I was having some kind of minor identity crisis where I was wondering if I need to step back and see what I'm doing to make everyone flee from me lol. Luckily I was distracted by deliciously zesty blackened chicken and red chile sauce.
When Mr. Grumpy gets here it won't matter anyway. I'll plug into all my cabs, crank the volume and liquefy everyone within a 100 mile radius.
I've been going through similar B.S. with guitar players. People keep responding, all excited - then they can't commit to a measly shaging two hours on a weekend afternoon.
I've started bugging people that I know, putting out feelers that way. At this point I'd rather have some come to us with a recommendation from someone that we know. Seems like that would work best for us right now.

Yeah, that's about how it is for me too. I just want to practice for a couple hours on a Saturday afternoon or weeknight. I even have my own space, with gear for everyone and I've been willing to rent a practice space out of town, no dice.

He might have a point in some cases about freaking people out. Granted you have access to gear and a recording space that should freak them out in a way that should excite them enough to at least see what's up.
Twice last year this guy who had my number contacted me about starting something. I was eager, but he was so damn eager he kept missing my priorities, and that happened to be finishing school. I had time to practice probably 1-2 times a week and shows when they came, but this guy clearly had like something all cooked up already that I couldn't keep up with. I ended up looking flaky because he gave me a full plate when I wasn't that hungry yet.
Point being he claimed he had a lot of songs written, eager to record, wanted to play out and tour etc. you have similar goals. I'm new to music and playing compared to most if not all of you. So there is an intimidation factor, that's probably amplified if you tell them you have written a lot already and eager to record. In my head I'm instantly thinking "well poopie how the hell am I gonna learn all this and record I don't even know if I like the music let alone the guy"... Or "damn if everything's written, and he records professionally, what am I even bringing to the table?"
Personally my advice would be dial it way back and just say your interested in creating a heavy band similar to x that plays out. If you dial it back and play dumb a little bit I think you will get at least more show ups, can't promise they'll work. But think about it, everyone wants close to the same things from a band, we all write at home alone. Wait til you jam to show some riffs and make it seem more natural.
Reasonable advice, that's what I started doing about a month ago. The current approach is just "I'm a bassist in my 30's, I have good gear and reliable transportation. I'm free to practice once a week and I'd like to join or start a band that will eventually gig and record. Bands I like/influences are ____".
There is one on your side of the state I believe. Port Huron. I dont think it is for sale, but would be easier to drive there to test it out. That said, feel free to come to GR.

A few months ago I had another local band seek me out to potentially join their group. They are the ones that gig a ton. I learned a set of their material, went out to a gig, and sat in with them with no rehearsal. They all liked what I did, and said that I was a good fit.
No follow up, and no response to my emails. They have not added a bass player, and still gig.
Musicians are just flakes.
Yea, hopefully someone dredges up.
An assumption I'm going to make is that most of us who play know at least one other musician on friend terms. So there is also the possibility these flakes just started stuff with friends.
Another bigggg possibility is most people are drunk/stoned/high/bored and responding to a number of ads then later just ignoring replies as people on craigslist seem to do when a simple never mind I can't would simplify things.
