Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Thanks you Lee Jackson Day for having today off of work! Traded my EWS Fuzzy Drive for s Malekko Wolftone Unity Fuzz last night. I can't wait to diddle that thing. Funny how listening to this genre of music makes you turn a pedal's gain knob to ten then say nope not enough gain, then put it straight to being a flipper like thr EWS.
Oh and for thr DADGADers that Mel Bay Understanding DADGAD book landed yesterday and it is excellent. So complete you would never need another book on the subject. Kind of cool that drop D on bass is DADG so I can do some things from the book on bass or electric too.

Had to look that holiday up. lol from 1989 to 2000 it was merged with MLK day to make a crazy holiday celebrating two confederate leaders and a civil rights leader at once.

Science is a cruel b!tch.

I saw that article you posted, but have some questions about it. For the cross firing pic, for a 90 cf, is one facing the audience and the other the side of the stage? haha, or am angling each cab 45deg with the center line shooting out towards the audience?

And, the graphs, seemed to show many of the valleys are the upper range, but guitar cabs are setup next to each other all the time - wouldn't this more greatly affect the guitar cabs? And if so, why are they doing it so often?

Sorry for the 'tard speak, I have never tried to run multiple cabs.

I would rotate that alignment with both pointed out in to the audience. Center line towards the back of the room if you will.

Yes this becomes more, and more of an issue the higher in frequency you get.

"But I play bass, so this doesnt matter..."

If you play with distortion, which adds more content your up upper harmonics, then it matters. And it does effect guitards, and worse than us bassists. Ever go to a show and stand right in front of a 412? It will cut your head off, move over to the side a bit, and it gets a lot better. It is also part of why guitards over power the mix, yet insists that they are not too loud.

As for why they do it? Guitar is steeped in tradition, voodoo, and superstition. They dont know better, and dont want to hear anything besides, "Get a marshall, and two 412's"

Just about to head out for the second half of 6am to midnight.

Worst.

I've got this weekend off, then school starts on Tuesday, then I'm traveling to anaheim on wednesday, NAMM show thursday, friday, saturday, sunday, travelling monday, back to work tuesday, then class, then trying to get my half of a 500 page catalog done. It's going to be busy for a while.

Checked out the band Witchrider, I'm adding them to my "perfectly-talented-but-sounds-way-too-much-like-QOTSA-for-me-to-take-seriously" list. Before today it was just Oak is Keeping. I understand influences, and I understand that all Doom/Stoner/Sludge is derivative to a point, but for some reason these note-for-note QOTSA clones just bother me. If I wanted to listen to Queens of the Stone Age I would listen to Queens of the Stone age, not some watered-down lame carbon copy.

/rant.

Yeah I hear you on them. I enjoy their tunes because I enjoy
QOTSA especially QOTSA songs without the screaming vocals I guess more. But they do carbon copy so much.

Appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. With Center line pointing to audience, and I think you mentioned 135d being a good cf angle, that doesn't seem bad at all. ALmost imperceptible, audience visual wise, from being 180 side by side.

Ah, see I'm the opposite. Nick balanced out the band, added danger and for the lack of a better word - balls to their sound. For me they got a lot less exciting after we was axed. (Although I still love the first album more than pretty much everything and he's not on it.)
