Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread Part Ten - What is this thread about again?

So, I'm anxious to get other opinions, but maybe you aren't saying anything because it's better to say nothing at all than something mean...? I hope my music doesn't suck too bad

For some reason I always feel like my songs are good until other people listen to them... then I get all self conscious about them.
Thanks dude. I can't decide how the lyrics should be. I have the voice for it but I'm on the fence if I want them sung, like Goatsnake or yelled/screamed like Weedeater.
You guys know of any stoner bands that sing and scream? It almost seems like the doom guys scream and the stoner guys sing.

Starts off real dark and doomy and goes into a full on 70s Sabbath rock song. Love it! Really dig the vocals on this too.

Btw Joe, I also like your stuff a lot, especially the second song! Hopefully you will be able to add the rest of the instruments soon .
Seriously! There aren't many bass solos in rock (let alone stoner rock). When you get one, let it fly!
So...maybe I do know how to play bass. HAHAHA! Thanks for the kind words so far. IMO, the lyrical passages are what make the songs. I have really stretched my vocal limits trying to write these songs. Maybe I'll try to add some vocals after my buddy does the guitar tracks.
Joe...Here's my thoughts on the tracks you posted:
Trekked - Good solid riff to build a song on. I can hear a lot of drum and guitar parts that would go well. It could go off in a lot of directions, so there's not much to say, but I like the style and it has a lot of potential. The main riff has the kind of feel I like to play when I'm jamming by myself at home.
Tracer - Beginning riff is cool, goes on for a bit longer than holds my attention, but it might be different with other instruments and vocals. I like the middle section after the stop and go part. I can hear a good guitar solo or vocal part over that. I imagine some great drum fills in those rhythmic gaps, I like the concept. I think I would like to hear the beginning riff branch out a bit, if there were guitars over it I'd say have them keep up the basic riff and have the bass part work some harmonies. It works well for the end of the song as is. Although I could hear the faster part at the end being at the beginning of that section and ending with the slower part instead.
Desolate - Really bare bones and repetitive, which is not a bad thing for this style. A song like this lives or dies based on the band as a whole and how everything comes together (especially the vocalist IMO), but it's a good foundation. The uptempo part feels like the last note should be something different to me, but it's a good bridge for a vocal part or maybe guitar solo that could be really fun. Although I think maybe it could come a bit earlier in the song, dunno.
Some really good riffs, sounds like you have some good ideas to build off of if you can find some good players to flesh it out. I'm filling in a lot of gaps with my imagination though, so I'm sure it could come out very different than what I'm imagining.

That is exactly the type of criticism I wanted. Thanksfor taking the time to listen through. On Desolate, the faster part would be this crazy, almost grindcore part to change things up a bit. But yeah, it's definitely a doom track. Lyrical content is about the post apocolyptic war age and corrupt government entities that brought us there.
Tracer actually was originally written with the start stop part as the intro. It's awesome that you picked up on that and yes, once I involve others, these song structures will more than likely change. I agree with the intro riff being a little longer than I anticipated and this is where the debate on vocal style comes in. If I sing the songs, they will have a few riff intro before the vocals kick in. If I scream them, that measure would be cut in half.
Trekked. This is actually the first song I wrote when I decided that punk music started getting stale for me. It has all the elements I like to hear when I listen to stoner rock. The blues run in the middle is totally designed for a guitar lead. I'll have to see what my VA buddy comes up with. The lyrics for this one are themed around green and medieval fantasy.
You've got a lot to work with Joe. Seems like you have a solid vision for what you want to do, that makes it a lot easier to be productive IMO. If you just find people who are like minded and good at their instruments that you can trust to be creative within that vision, it could come out really well.
I like giving feedback on structure and arrangement. I think I'm a better producer than a bassist, honestly. The band I'm involved with that has the most productive output I hardly ever play the songs on bass more than once or twice, once to learn and one take to record usually. I do all the arranging, recording and producing though and that takes up the majority of the time I spend on the band. That's Mental Waste, the punk/grindcore band I do though. I love doing the same with stoner and doom, but hardly ever get a chance to, since none of my own projects ever stick and I'm the low man on the totem pole in Cold Mourning. I'm trying to get a new project going though, maybe I will have luck this time and be able to do my own thing as well.

Yeah, did that for awhile, found that the $80/month spent on mobile internet was better spent on... consumables.
So now I got this handy-dandy iPhone 3GS jailbroke unlocked T-Mobile phone on the $.10/minute pay-as-you-go burner phone plan. Its pretty awesome, and I'm probably one of the few people in the USA who pay $20/month for their iPhone.
