+1. With the super elitist punk scene here, I was surprised to learn that there were even 20 punk bands in this town. Is the stoner crowd nicer and more inviting because we are stoned? Why are people jerks? When I was trying to find a punk band to play with, every single person I met was a flake. Even people that were just moving here. One guy wanted to start a crust band, just moved here from Oregon. I text him, call him, then he drops off the face of the earth. Next guy was a two piece band that wanted to add bass. Some weird punk/electronic/whatever. Got them on the phone, tried to work out a time, then he never called back, ever. Not even to say the spot was filled. Next I joined a band where the guitarist was moving in a month. After I expressed interest in finding another guitar player and the other band members weren't having it. They wanted a bass player until that guy moved away (Stupid idea). Next I met a guy that wanted to start some stoner project. His ad seemed normal, listed Melvins as reference. He talked about having job/family/etc, so I'm thinking cool, me too. Then I call him and he acts like I'm stuck up because I can't jam 3 nights a week. He's like well never mind then. Then he all curses me out by text message after I asked him why we couldn't just jam one night a week as I had a family and all that too. People are ***holes. I just can't seem to meet the right people around here. The few cool people I have met, don't play anything so it's been really boring for me musically for the last 7 years.

i don't think this can be overstated enough! in my (past) years of getting bassplayer mag, the thing that working pros would always come back to was hang factor. with as much time as i spend w/ my bandmates, i just don't want to hang w/ a$$ holes.

the ability to compromise, is also a huge part of the equation.

also, there is a need for a common vision. i have played w/ a guy who line up in every way (cool, similar interests, good musician, etc), but we simply wanted to pull things to different ends of the same spectrum. it ends up not being fulfilling for either of us.

Just keep at it. It took me two years to get the project together that I'm in now. I always wanted to play together with one of my friends in town but we both play bass and neither one of us could or would even want to play guitar. We just said screw it. Two bass band (no guitards I've had it with dealing with them), but we would need a really amazing drummer. The idea kicked around for a while but we really couldn't think of any drummers that would be into or have the time to do it. (great drummers are always in like three bands) So one day I get a phone call saying "I found us a drummer" It ended up being a drummer that I was playing with in another band for a while. Totally different style of music (suckabilly) It never even crossed my mind that he would be into it. Been together since then. Just keep at it you never know what will happen or who will be into it. As for punk bands ehh...... not my thing. Every one I've known always has this attitude with them.

I got all my overplaying out of my system when I was in punk bands for years. The more bored I was, the more walking bass lines. I played A LOT of walking bass lines.

I'm getting together to jam on some new music this weekend. Got a buddy of mine to play drums. I tried starting a sludge band with him a few years ago, but he kind of flaked. He usually sings or plays guitar in bands, but he's a good drummer. Never met the guitarist before, so we'll see how it goes. I'm trying to over think it or write anything ahead of time. Just going in to jam and see what happens.

They need to be creative. They all need to want to play the same music. Indeed. It's like being in a real relationship with 2-5 other people. Who are all also in relationships with 2-5 other people.

You are absolutely right, but there's a difference between playing something properly, and playing something properly.

Think of the Alice In Chains song "Would?". It's all about the feel and the vibe, not so much about the actual notes.

Dream Theater covers it during soundcheck. Sure, they play all the correct notes in the right meter. But holy crap do they miss the feel.

No problem Arik, no offense taken. Actually its rather funny to me to see the cultural difference in tone when even discussing the topic... around my parts, its so commonplace and accepted that old guys at work have called me to their desk to show me some deal on some website for bulk ammunition or a new shotgun or whatever. I could see in other countries or parts of the USA where you could be labeled a psychopath for that kinda behavior, but like I said around here its as common and accepted as discussing bread flavors.


Back to DOOM talk!

What you guys are saying, both on the technical skills required for doom music, and the difficulty in finding good solid musicians, is what drove me to the genre. I dig more of the stoner rock side, singing vs. screamed vocals, bluesy runs vs. repetitive drones, but even still I'd expect it to be easier to find cool bandmates, and quicker to create a set and get on stage with said bandmates, than other genres or other metal music. Too often (when I played in thrash metal or classic rock) the whole band would be knee-arrowed to a halt because the guitarist isn't "happy" with their solo "yet." Thats what drove me to bands like Kyuss and QOTSA, making the simplest guitar solo that even I could play sound boss, if theres even need for a guitar solo.

After this semester, I think I am going to hit craigslist hard to get some people together. I might try to contact my dirt rocker guitar friend (played with him for a few months) to see if he ever wrote a guitar riff for the sound cloud stuff I posted for yall. He's had those same riffs since before my baby was born. (march if you are keeping track). Maybe He'll surprise me and have actually done something with them. If not, I think it's time to move on. As cool as he is, what's the point of trying to play music if the other guy doesn't try at all.

Or should I even say anything? We are on two different planes here. He is into pedaling chug chug stuff. It hasn't worked with him yet, but he is so nice. I don't want to feel like a douche.

Move to Pburgh, hang out with me and Laz, and lets start a dualing bass band dude. If you can put up with "Steeler Nation" its really not a bad place to be, and Pens season kicks ass. Guaranteed to be the only dual-bass band in the 'Burgh. And like I said, female Danzig singer!!!

I just put up a ad on CL to find guitar and drums, can't wait to sift through my garbage pile of an inbox tomorrow.
