I have Volume One from Sleep and its pretty friken good.

Yea, it's 11min longer than the original and touched up a bit more. I wish I could find more to sample from them because I don't want to drop $13 for one song that I might not like.

It's not worth it. It's literally two or three riffs for 60 minutes.

I just call most of that stuff rock and roll or metal.

Some of the cream of that crop are: Isis (ambient metal), Clutch (rock and roll), Yeti (prog metal), Mastodon (odd time metal), Kyuss (rock and roll), Keelhaul (odd time hardcore/metal), Mondo Generator (punkish hard rock), Mouth of the Arcitect (ambient metal), and Pelican (industrial/ambient metal)

I have heard good things about Monster Magnet, but I haven't checked them out yet.


Also, you can start with the originators of the genre, Black Sabbath. I dig the Ozzy years, but that is all I own by them.

+1 to Isis, I recently listened to some of their stuff, and I really liked it.

I have only heard one song by Pelican, but it killed. Isis is an awesome band and Panopticon is what Tool tried and failed to achieve with Lateralus.

Not to bash Tool, I dig them well enough.

Great thread. My 3 favorite "stoner" bands (by no means limited to) over the past year or so are:

Mastodon, Keelhaul, and High On Fire...

Any recommendations on other bands that are similar to those 3??

Not a bad list: I think blues for the red sun is incredibly overrated though. A lot of it seems filler to me... and Nick Oliveri's tone kinda makes for a harsh listen. Also Rated R is such a better Queens album.

Agreed. Even their Eponymous album is better than Songs for the Deaf and it is more like Kyuss Pt. 2 than actual QOTSA.

I watched the Double Live Bootleg again last night by Acid Bath. Really good band. Dax's new group Deadboy and the Elephantmen has some very interesting music. Sort of stoner rock sounding really cool stuff too, his voice has only gotten better.

Yeah I realy like Deadboy, but its so hard to find their stuff I have about 8-10 songs from one of their albums.

I picked it up off overstock.com no problem but I had a hell of a time finding it when it first came out. I kinda forgot about it but after hearing new Deadboy songs it got me jonesin for some Acid Bath flashbacks so I found it and picked it up. Pretty good stuff but I wish they showed the bassist some more, I wanna know what kind of effects he used!

Has anyone heard Black Mountain? They just released their first album and I heard the mp3s on StonerRock.com , its pretty cool. More like Liquid Sound Company than any of the other bands on there. Not so heavy or doomy as they are trippy and psychedelic. I ll probaly buy the album.

Also, I read on Clutch's Website that they got a new album coming out - Robot Hive/ Exodus . Its got me excited, I love Clutch,.......matter of fact , I just purchased Elephant Riders and the Self Titled to go along with PRF and Blast Tyrant.

Im not sure Lightning Bolt fits the label but they rocked when I saw them the other night.
