Straight up Power Amps

My friend's GFA-555 was the best "bass" amp I ever borrowed...why can't I find an actual, dedicated bass amp with that sort of power section? Or can I, and I just haven't seen it yet? The thing is fantastic.

The Crest CA9 would be my recommendation.

I am working on setting up a new system. I have a preamp that I am going to use, but I need a power amp.
I am looking for a minimum of 1,000 watts, BUT it has to do that into 2 Ohms.
I use 3-8 Ohm cabinets.. (yes I know - 2.6 Ohms) Ok. Here is the problem, Crown and QSC - my first choices do not go to 2 Ohms bridged mono....
Help people!

Most Crowns will do 2 ohm in paralell-mono mode, mine does.

Hey again irienome, I thought you expressed your question perfectly. As I mentioned before, you can run the Crown "Power-Tech3" in parallel mono mode down to 2 ohms; it's okay if you're using an odd number of cabinets, as long as you don't exceed the amp's published, minimum impedance rating { 2.6 ohm's is just fine }. The Crown PT3 will deliver somewhere around 1350 watts in parallel mono mode, @ 2.6 ohm's.

Mr. Bowlus took the words right out of my mouth. The CA9 will do 1000W on each side at 2 ohms all day long. (I'll be on the next continent because that booger is going to be LOUD!!!)

I use to use a Power Tech 2 through a SWR Interstellar preamp. Blew the amp up after using it twice. I know that the power techs were supposed to be pretty good amps.

How is running a unequal load to each side of the amp not an issue? Won't that cause stress on one side of the amp more than the other? I don't know. Will the impeadance difference cause any problems within the amp. I realize I can just turn up the one side to match the output of the other, but what is the physical effect on the amp?

It's not an issue. Look at it this way: the amp has separate inputs, outputs, and gain controls, so the two channels obviously can also be used with different signals and/or at different levels, both of which will present different operating conditions. So don't worry about it.

So, inorder to get at least 850 watts to my main 2 speakers, what would you recommend? I just don't see the power I want in most of the QSC line. I am a big fan of QSC. It was the first power amp I ever owned. I liked the MX1500, but I have had series One's and several others!

You want at least 850 watts into a 4Ω load? Among QSC amps, there are the PLX 3102 and PLX 3602. The PLX 2502 and RMX 2450 are just a little under that.

I am currently running my SWR Bass 750 at 2(ish) Ohms. I run 3 8 Ohm speaker cabinets. The SWR gives me 850 watts. I am looking to increase my wattage on stage into the 3 cabinets!
