strange Wenge situation

I had a piece of Wenge 38" long 1"+ thick and 7+" wide. all 6 sides were classic Wenge black. I sawed off a3" wide piece for fingerboards and then resawed it. The inside was brownish. I have never seen this before. Have any of you? Will it turn to black?

Most wenge I have used is chocolate brown with verigated black grain. I have used some that was almost all brown with very little grain definition. This may be what you have run into, from my experience, it stays pretty much as it is.

There is a lot of variation in Wenge... but most people think it is Black. I've also seen my share of it and it varies from Brown to Black. I don't think it will ever turn darker.

i ordered a wenge blank recently and i t came waxed on all sides for protection from moisture e.t.c as it is an open grained wood, needless to say it was black as your boot. I think once you have prepared your fingerboard you can oil, wax or TRU-oil your wood for a nice black piece.

I've had the standard dark brown wenge (you want to call it black but we all know it really isn't) come in with blondish stripes in it. At the time I was pretty bummed but now I wish I had access to some more.

Sometimes it is yellowish inside. It should darken down with the photo degeneration process.

Interesting. Larry you are the wood man and I want to believe that it will darken. I went on and used some Ebony for that FB so I can wait and see with the Wenge how long do you think it will take? Scott what would you use it for if you had more? I will try to post a photo soon. If Ican get some decent weather to shoot in. I live in Deland. You may have seen the town on the news lately. Not real pretty now. We were lucky others sure weren't.

Hey Tom, Glad to hear the Tornado's and storms didn't damage you or your shop. I have friends in Lake County and Volusia, Luckilly they just had some wind damage.

Thanks yup some of those people just got destroyed. I am surprised there weren't more deaths seeing the mess that the storms made. I just had and additional 16 X28 shop built and it did just fine. Now if I can just get power out to it.

Y'all need my secret weapon:

BLACK LEATHER DYE

Yeah, black wood stain works too, but a small bottle of Feibing's black leather shoe dye is far cheaper. My brother and I have done our rosewood fretboards and it is such a pimpin' method to get your wood as black as possible. He's done three of his guitars with awesome results, and I ddi one bass.

Get some and test it on your wenge. It should be superblack once you're done.

in the shop, where I bought my wenge (chocolate-brown), I saw completely light coloured (like yours) pieces of it. I would leave it as it is... (I'm in 'naked' woods... )

YES. I doctored the edge of a Wenge fretboard on my Warwick; rounding it off to accomadate my right hand slap angle. Inside wood had much lighter tones. Applies butchers wax several times and now that area is darker.
