String mystery!

A couple of months ago I bought a used sr500 from my local guitar center with some of the best feeling strings ive ever played. Ive tried my best to hunt the strings down while making my current set last but the g string broke on me and the rest are getting pretty worn.

Anyways, the only distinct thing about the strings are they have brass ends and the opposite ends near the tuning pegs are telescoped on the E,A, and D strings.

Well you can rule out D'addario, they have colored ends.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by telescoped? Do you mean they get thinner on the end?

If they feel different I'm thinking it might be coated. Probably not Elixirs because they have a chrome colored end.

I think he means the way there are layers of windings tapering down so they wrap around pegs.

If there is no silk wrapped around them, they could be Ernie Ball Slinkys. Not sure if they're the only brand with brass ends and no silk wrappings but they're one of a very few at least.

Yeah thats exactly what I meant, thanks for clearing that up!

And doh, I completely forgot to check out Ernie balls! Ive felt a set of Ernie balls on a friend of mine's bass and they didn't feel or sound nearly as good. Maybe there were a different gauge or not broken in. Ill check out the Ernie balls though, thanks!

Not necessarily. Larger string companies have OEM contracts, and they are usually made to order. For example, Ibanez advertises they use D'Addario strings, but they all have brass ball ends. They may or may not have the colored balls that are in the retail sets.

Yeah... it's going to be pretty hard to narrow that down. Sfarzo, Hartke, D'Aquisto (now defunkt), Darco, Snarling Dogs.... There's probably a dozen more.

Try this: try to describe the characteristics of those strings that you really like and then ask Jason Basstringsonline for the strings he would suggest that match your description. Narrow his suggestions down to the ones that have bare ends and brass ball ends. Buy a set each of whatever's left and see which ones are the ones you dig. That's about all I can suggest.

Thanks for the replies guys!

This morning I decided to call guitar center and see if they could help me out. Turns out the bass I bought belonged to a salesman there! They didn't know what strings he normally used so I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow to find out.

I wouldn't count on the expertise of the guitar center employee. Even if it was his.
