Subway+ Bass DI-Preamp II

Not that this thread is an interview... @agedhorse , What might be the most modern technology in or used in the development of the new unit? Had you waited for some technical threshold to be crossed that enabled its production?

I promise not to read the response in Jonny Ive's voice if you say, "Aluminium".


A big part of it is designing the pedal to be easily manufactured using highly automated machinery and processes without having to resort to surface mount components. We use all traditional through-hole components, name brand pots, switches and jacks.

In short, it's with sophisticated automation, and this is unfortunately where China has an edge on the US. Their auto-insert machinery (with auto-verify of each part prior to insertion) is far superior to what we typically use in the US because they assemble so much of this technology. While labor is part of it, there's very little traditional assembly labor in each pedal the labor is mostly for supporting the high tech manufacturing infrastructure and 100% computerized testing of all features on each pedal.

The savings went into the better parts and a real savings to our customers (which is what most have pleaded for since the market for a $400 preamp pedal is pretty small by comparison). I suppose we could have sold it for more, but the powers that be actually considered the customer's clearly asking for something like this... it's also somewhat of an experiment to see if we can expand some of our products (or ideas for new products) to players who don't have "unlimited" disposable income.

As a total electronics newb, I do have a question.
Mine seems to be working just fine at 9v but is there any benefit to running it at 18v if the option is there?
I'm looking to upgrade my power supply because my current one is cheap (noisy) and only has 9v options so I was just curious.

Agedhorse, it's awesome that you're so actively involved in the bass community and the passion you have for your work really comes through. My hat's off to you sir.

If there isn't an issue running the pedal at 9V, there's no benefit to running it at 18V.

The primary difference at 18V is that it can then drive the lowest sensitivity pro audio power amps. The maximum output level is much higher at 18V, but most players have no need for this.

Got mine yesterday. This is my first Mesa product and the initial impression is very positive. My current amps are a GK 800rb, GK400rb, Ampeg V4b (currently out of order and needing repair), and the GB Shuttle 9.0. I bought this DI to run as a pre into the power amp section of the Shuttle 9.0 giving myself a more flexible pre option as well as dipping my toes into the Mesa tone pool.

This DI is bringing the punch i've been missing since my Ampeg is down. I'd say seemingly even more punch (even though the tube amp seems heftier in tone) but this thing can get deep as well. You can get a very modern sound (extended lows and highs) as well as many other sounds. It seems very versatile. Treble wise it needs to be ran full on to try to match the GB shuttle pre brightness so perhaps peak treble isn't comparably as high but the DI has adequate highs to be plenty clear if needed. I'm not someone wanting extreme highs of playing chordal stuff or slapping/popping a bunch although i'm sure this could handle that type of playing.

I'm really enjoying having the two adjustable mid frequencies options this DI provides because I prefer a dip around 500k and a low mid boost around 200hz. If I need more definition or high mid then I prefer to boost anywhere between 800-2k hz. Between the voicing filter and the mid options I can have all three which is something not possible to accomplish on any of my previous amps because they either have only one midscoop filter and one mid knob or they have two that don't have adjustable frequencies.

So, overall it's been a good experience so far. If I was to describe what i'm hearing as MY preferred "Mesa tone" i'd call it the modern vintage, an oxymoron, but for what I personally prefer to hear from this product is an updated take on the vintage sound and it's doing just that.

I ended up shipping about 50 kits starting around April 25th. Quite a few of you have received them and have let me know they've arrived.
Every one of the orders were shipped via USPS to keep the cost down. Unfortunately it has been taking in some cases about 2 weeks to get to their destination.
Fortunately, so far I've only had one that didn't get delivered and it was from my first shipment. I have some extras that I won't be selling until I know all of the sets have been received.

You might try using the bright switch first, then set the treble control where you need it.

Are you using a cabinet without a tweeter?
 
Did the bright switch this morning. Switching on then setting treble definitely makes it where you don't have to run it full. Cab wise I have one with tweeter and one without. Thanks.
Be sure your tweeter is working.

So, despite the talk about not needing to go 18v, I am thinking of doing it anyway 🤨

Does anyone have an opinion on these voltage doubles like this for my 1 Spot 9v…


Or should it be a dedicated 18v power supply 🤔

All this talk about supply voltage reminds me of a post I made in a different thread recently.

Is the Subway+Bass DI-Preamp II power supply input protected by a "crow bar" circuit, or some other better way to protect the pedal from over-voltage?

I think the power input does not care about polarity. Is that correct?

I wish every portable device I owned was powered by way of a USB-C connector!

I would recommend the 18v supply.

No, not necessary imo. 18v supplies are the highest voltage available in a pedal power supply, the pedal can safely handle a 20% over-voltage.
