Summer Build Off 2022 - Get Ready!

Gonna have to sit this one out. My garage gets way too hot in the summer for all the sawdust flying around.
I'll just sit in the air conditioning and live vicariously through everyone else's builds.
I would just move the furniture into the garage and turn the house into a shop.
I mean, I don't really see another option.

Are there any old threads specifically about processing your own lumber that I could resurrect? I'm thinking about firing one up.
Off the top of my head, I don't recall any, but there may be something that's really old. It's a great idea though, as the topic of where to find xyz lumber comes up pretty regularly. Processing your own, whether right from raw logs, or just gluing together boards to make a body blank would be a sticky-worthy resource IMHO.

As to whether I will participate, it depends on how quickly I can get stuff out of the way, both physically and in my head.

Here's my situation: I recently divorced, and I now live alone in what used to be the family home. Besides processing the emotions, I'm changing some things about the house, which takes time, plus I now have more household chores.

There's a sizeable room (floored, painted, heated) that will become my workshop. Right now, that room is full of stuff that belongs elsewhere, and when that's gone I need to provide some closets for my tools. And a new workbench, as my ex-wife took the old one. (We are on the friendliest of terms, by the way.)

To add to the fun, there's now alimony to take care of, so I need to do all of this on a zero budget.

So.... if I get things sufficiently sorted out in time, I will most certainly participate. I plan to build a mandola, which falls into the non-bass category.

I have studied it some, and would love to hear from people with experience.
There are a lot of hurdles in the way of getting feasible amounts of furniture-quality lumber. Instruments, on the other hand, don't take very long pieces, or very wide ones if you don't insist on a one piece body.
We had a mesquite limb come down earlier this week, and I cut it up this afternoon. 4"-6" in diameter, not straight, and a lot of insect damage. I'll split, dry, and mill some small sections, which will most likely end up on the lathe. There is a pecan next to the house that has died and needs to come down. I might haul that trunk to a band mill if the center isn't too punky.

I hoped to make the Summer Build Off as inclusive as possible. The non-bass category came up because of the non-bass instruments this past Build Off. I just figured they were just as open, informative and inspirational as every other build thread and should get a chance to compete against one another. I think choosing between a 7 string guitar, a flamed padauk electric zither, and a rube goldberg type marble machine would be fun.

Do I understand correctly that this summer the non-bass category will be a voting category as well? I think in the last WBO it was non-voting, but for this build-off some (friendly) competition could further encourage this category.

I missed the WBO earlier this year, but I think I can make some sawdust this summer. I already have some ideas floating around. Muahaha!:D

Yes - the plan is to include them in the voting and compete with one another. Which will be interesting where there is a nuclear-powered electric zither competing with a motion-sensor-activated bass gong. :smug:

Non-Bass Build - scratch or partial build that is not primarily a bass register instrument
Beej, can this also include bass related, non instrument gear like a bass cabinet or head? If so I have a couple of ideas, but still maybe only in time for the next WBO.

Not really interested in voting specifically, but as a parallel thread because I have the skillset to do these as well.

The idea for a cab is a bit unique.

I'll be doing a matter-anti-matter reactor, complete with a warp core!

Just as long as it isn't a warp-core from a Galaxy-class ship--- those things would breach almost every other week.
Ok geeks... I'm building a bass that will travel the Mycelial Plane via a Displacement-activated Spore Drive Hub!!:smug:
... AND...for good measure ....auxiliary power provided by, a Zero Point Module. (ZedPM):cautious::p
