Question is, how long does a build normally take you? If it's more than the duration of the build-off then start now and enter as a partial.
I was considering that. I can finish in the time frame as long as I stick with it. But I also tend to get side tracked with other projects or put a project in time out while I troubleshoot so realistically it will take longer. I'll probably just start now but we'll see
If you get everything sourced and dimensioned, all the design decisions made, all the templates made, maybe even use the templates on some scrap wood to practice and/or check for things you need to revise the design about, that should speed things right along. But it's a rather low-key contest, so if it appears to make more sense to enter as partial, well, start a build thread and get started, then pause it for a few minutes to enter as a partial, and then keep going. 
You could do a complete mock-up in scrap 2x framing lumber scavenged from construction sites or other cheap or free wood. A few have been turned into fully functional basses on past threads, IIRC, though that does involve using some hardware that won't be easily salvaged, if finances are tight. The practice will improve the "real" one for most everybody that's a casual builder.

I just ordered a cnc router, I will need to learn to use it on something, so why not a musical instrument? Or is it cheating?
I hope to have an assembly and a partial. A couple things I don't understand. First, the start date is set, but since the theme is announced already, what keeps someone from taking a pic now and starting work then posting the pic on the start date? Second, what does the theme actually mean? What should or shouldn't we do to work within that theme? Thanks.
There is a specific phrase that isn't released until the start date that is supposed to appear in your "pile o'wood" photo or the equivalent photo in the other categories. I suppose someone could photoshop a piece of paper with the phrase written on it into an already existing picture. Folks will do almost anything for the valuable prizes.
CNC is a tool... I don't think you'll be chastised for using a tool to help build an instrument.
I'm pretty sure a few of the other folks on here have and use CNC routers. Go for it!

I thought the theme was the phrase. That clears that up. So, what does the theme mean?
Yeah I'm having difficulty finishing in time for the build-offs, partially because I'm such a sluggard, but slow suppliers (are you listening, Warmoth and Bartolini??) are a big issue too. I'll keep trying maybe some day I'll actually line a project up properly with a build-off deadline...

I'm feeling that this time around, I might step out of my comfort zone and build an FSO.

I'll pass on this one too, I missed the last one due to injury, I'll be in the shop getting repaired this time, but hopefully in the near future I will be making shavings again! I'll be watching and building vicariously throughout the build though.

Yew. It's normally mostly orange. The purple is caused by a reaction to iron. It's an interesting wood, often described as a softwood that thinks its a hardwood. It is non-porous like a softwood but is both hard and stiff.
The point is just to provide a few parameters to help inspire creativity.
It's not cheating, but now I'm jealous.
