Before the first set I always check :-
My mic height and angle, it has to be just right.
My cooling fan is pointing directly at me.
Setlist is clearly visible.
Before every set :-
Make sure that I have a full glass, usually water as I always drive.
Have a nice clear space to stand with no cables under my feet.
A bass player I know will not play unless he has his "gigging socks" on, one fluorescent green, the other fluorescent orange. They have to be on the correct feet of course.
I guitarist I played with for years said he wouldn't play if I hadn't taken my gig case, said it was unlucky, fortunately I always take it. It's an old cardboard suitcase covered in stickers and full of spare cables, tools, multimeter, soldering iron, fuses, jacks, mains plugs, paracetamol, nail clippers, business cards, promo stuff, maps, pens, paper, emergency money, spare bulbs (vehicle and stage lights), and probably a lot more I have forgotten about.

That's the very definition of alcohol abuse in my book.
