My post was made in the context of a discussion about customs duties and tariffs. I mentioned the name of a rather well know person who has an obsessive interest in imposing tariffs. Verbotten.

Yep. These days even a whiff of politics gets reported/flagged/edited. It's fine, it's in the TOS. I've had my knuckles wrapped a couple of times. Abide or ride.

I'm going to expand on @kesslari 's (how's Morticia?) post above. My understanding is that while challenging a moderator decision in the Forum proper is not allowed, going to PM often can bring fruitful discussions. I've gotten flagged more than a couple of times -- by different mods -- and I go to PM to get a detailed explanation. I present my side, the mod presents his side, and resolution is reached, usually in a courteous and respectful manner on both sides. After discussion, only once have I felt the mod overreacted.

Being a mod is not easy, from the demands on time alone never mind the spectrum of temperaments on TalkBass. I could not do it. From mod PMs I have learned that they have to be very broad constructionists when it comes to defining "politics" and "religion." This is not so much because they want to be thought police as it is that public discourse now has become so frayed and over-sensitive that they pretty much have to nip in the bud anything that even remotely suggests trouble ahead. Douse the flame while it is still a backyard leaf-burning before it can can blown into a conflagration. It's just the times we live in.

Yeah it kinda does in the US.

As an American, this is news to me. I've never (knowingly) encountered any such connotations and consider it a loan word in the same vein as Wunderkind or Zeitgeist—or, to cite examples beyond German, words like sushi (Japanese), bandana (Hindi/Urdu), and apparatchik (Russian with Latinate etymology).

Mods alter or delete stuff that breaks forum rules or just combative stuff. I myself have gotten a little over zealous in some comments, and the mods deleted it.

I want to remember I read that post. Likely edited to avoid political discussions. While I understand that the moderators/owners want to keep this site free of political wars. In general, I find it sad and concerning that we cannot have adult conversations about certain topics. Just because my opinion differs from yours, that doesn't makes me a villain, patriotic, unpatriotic, socialist, fascist etc. Unless the topic is a p with flats, then my opinion is the only one that is valid. of course.

Speaking as a retired history teacher, I would say that times when we could agree to disagree have been rare, all the way back to Jefferson and Adams. Much more common were times when we were prepared to suppress our opponents by any means available. I saw at least three of those in my own early lifetime, before I was 21.

There are precious few places today where we can share an interest without having to look over our shoulders for conflict, so I'm glad the mods here keep this as one of them. If I want a fight, all I have to do is buy a bumper sticker and go to the store.

The context of duties and tariffs, and especially the figures who impose them, are definitely political topics, at least in the USA.

Given that, the moderator had 4 choices (the 4th being to ignore the violation... not the right thing to do.)
The first would be to give you a warning and points for the violation.
The second and third would be if they considered the post crossed the line but not far enough that they wanted to give you a violation (or that it quoted a post that had been deleted for violating the ToS), and to either delete it or edit it. In either case they would be given the option to notify the user. They might not do so, either because they were in a hurry and human, or because they thought that it wasn't worth causing a kerfuffle and didn't really alter the meaning or intent of your post.

Do remember that there's also a violation for questioning moderation. The word "verbotten" has a context of nazi-ism. Is that your intended use?

I've gotten warnings about political statements from the mods before. I didn't like it, but I got over it. I am strongly opinionated in that area and most of you probably wouldn't want to deal with my opinions. I imagine the mods themselves are not a monolithic block politically, but they have to enforce neutrality and adhere to that themselves.

I don't see any problem with the policy/rule.
There are plenty of other websites and apps where political topics and opinions are tolerated or encouraged. We can all go there to discuss the topics in question.

One of the things that I like about TalkBass is the complete lack of political or religious posts and comments, and also the great work being done by the moderators to keep everything civil, friendly, fun, and informative regarding our favorite musical instruments.

Yeah, I kinda get that. Maybe its a Canada thing but here we can pretty much still talk to people about politics without it getting too worked up. I speak to coworkers about it all of the time and even though we don't always agree people tend to stay civil. Now FB I would agree but most of the people I see post on there are morons so I've basically stopped even going on FB or any other social media sites. Talkbass is probably the only online space I actively use to chat with others.
