I am not allowed to respond to this but I must say in my defence that I did not question the moderation per se. In fact, I acknowledged the right of the owner/moderator to do as they please with their forum. I questioned editing without any notice, to me or to subsequent readers, that the original post had been edited by moderators.

This is in the Terms & Rules, 1st sentence of the 4th paragraph;

"We reserve the rights to remove or modify any Content submitted for any reason without explanation."

It's so nice having a refuge free of politics. I feel strongly about my beliefs as well, and there are many online venues in which to express them. If I wanted to, I could get a Facebook account and go nuts. But sometimes a person just wants to have some room to breathe and argue over strings. My understanding is that while challenging a moderator decision in the Forum proper is not allowed, going to PM often can bring fruitful discussions. I've gotten flagged more than a couple of times -- by different mods -- and I go to PM to get a detailed explanation.

Just PM a mod, especially if you know the username of the specific mod who took action. Why "take it to the streets," so to speak, before giving the proper authority a chance to explain?

My post was made in the context of a discussion about customs duties and tariffs. I mentioned the name of a rather well know person who has an obsessive interest in imposing tariffs. Verbotten.

As an American, this is news to me. I've never (knowingly) encountered any such connotations and consider it a loan word in the same vein as Wunderkind or Zeitgeist—or, to cite examples beyond German, words like sushi (Japanese), bandana (Hindi/Urdu), and apparatchik (Russian with Latinate etymology).

Same here, outside of it being possibly used on Laugh In by Arte Johnson. I've never used it to borrow money or establish credit, however.

I see it as making fun of germans speaking german. Like the italian 'Sturmentruppen' tho the tradition of making fun of prussian style goes far beyond that. WW2 is just the most recent, most terrible trigger. Thus evoking the impression of some nazi association.

Stating that Trump is President is not against the rules per se, but very seldom is there a statement of that nature that isn't also accompanied by some other politically charged comment.

Being a mod is not easy, from the demands on time alone never mind the spectrum of temperaments on TalkBass. I could not do it. From mod PMs I have learned that they have to be very broad constructionists when it comes to defining "politics" and "religion." This is not so much because they want to be thought police as it is that public discourse now has become so frayed and over-sensitive that they pretty much have to nip in the bud anything that even remotely suggests trouble ahead. Douse the flame while it is still a backyard leaf-burning before it can can blown into a conflagration. It's just the times we live in.

This. Talkbass has managed to avoid becoming yet another pit of contention where every topic is politically divisive except the ones that don't begin that way but get there quickly. The only way to keep it clean is to establish rules, make them clear, and enforce them ruthlessly.

On the flip side, I'm glad this place is mostly free of politics. We all get too much of that everywhere else we go.

Agreed. It's best to avoid naming political figures on TB altogether. If there is a loophole, someone will always find a way to use it to troll "within the rules". So best to just avoid naming names. TB is the better for the moratorium on politics.

That comment was not limited to talkbass. We live in strange times where we lost the ability to agree to disagree.

I think people tend to be a tribal bunch. Much of the general populace's identity is wrapped up in their political leanings, it's who they are. Anything on the other side is seen as a direct assault on their tribe and taken personally. I think it's a good thing to not have that here. There's enough of it out and about.

I think some people have seen too many WWII movies. My dad and his borthers, second generation German immigrants, fought the Nazis and still used many German words in everyday conversation, including the word that shall not be said.

I present my side, the mod presents his side, and resolution is reached, usually in a courteous and respectful manner on both sides. After discussion, only once have I felt the mod overreacted.
