Sustain - Is it Overrated?

A properly built bass will sustain itself.

You want to be heard in the mix, you want decent tone, you want an articulate sound, you want it to stay in tune and intonate properly. But you do not need truckloads of sustain.

I agree, but having it as a consequence of design or happenstance is fun, and occasionally useful.

So would your post stating the reason you choose not to contribute to threads like this being the same reason that I posted a comment about the irony of people going on about sustain be doubly ironic? I'm not sure anymore. I may be suffering from an overdose of irony (clinically referred to as ironicosis). Or, would they cancel each other out?

Hmmm.

Cancel each other out? I think not.

More like one irony {mine} being piggy-backed onto another {yours} for sustained humorous effect.

'Amplified' is probably a good choice of words in this context...

At least that's my understanding, and why so many popularly held beliefs about certain construction materials and methods are questionable when it comes to actually leading to increased sustain.

The mid 60's non reverse Firebird sustains more than every other guitar I own, made of mahogany.

It rivals anything Carlos has. Bizarre.

It can be a problem.......but only sometimes.

Its also the lightest guitar I own.
