I've been playing one of the last SM-400s ever built into a (chrome grill) Goliath III 4x10 for over 100gigs a year for the last 10 years. Love that setup and still get compliments on the solid tone.

aural enhancer at 1 (o'clock), bass at noon, treble and transparency at 9. Graphic lowest band at 31Hz and maximum cut keeps FOH mixers happy. That amp really amplifies ALL frequencies: on my usa 5string lakland if I boost the bass all the way and just slowly wiggle the low 'B' you see the cones moving (that's what, 2Hz?).
Only gripe is the fan seems to be getting louder and kicking in earlier every year.


Ordered an Ampeg SVT-210av cab and headlite yesterday for some more flexibility.. will report back on how both amps handle the different cabinets.


I used to have a Workingman 15 combo and later on a 12 combo but sold those because the first was too big and the second one too small for a smaller rig (and both hopelessly overpriced)

A good yearly maintenance is always the best. I pull my cover off my Bass 750 at least once a year to clean out everything. My amp has been housed since I bought it in my SKB rack and has never left it. I have not even changed 6 space racks

I guessed that too (maintenance needed) - I never had it checked in the 10 years that I own it (2x tube replacement). I'll get that done as soon as the headlite arrives.


On tubes: are there people around who have some experience with different tubes in their SWR preamps? I had to change the tube a month ago (losing power when getting to temperature) and my bass shop suggested putting in a 7025 (because they were out of 12ax7's). I don't know what the difference should be, but I feel that te sound got a bit fatter with a little bit of grit added.

Hey, if you like it, roll with it. They're a shop and I'm assuming they're a reputable shop since you do business with them.

Sorry I don't have any experience or profound knowledge on tubes. Just showing support.

Interesting, can you describe the difference in sound between eg. the Goliath cabs and Aguilar? (if you ever heard the swr cabs that is)



I got my little Ampeg (210av) and while it doens't move the same amount of air as my GIII 4x10 (obviously) it is definitely a keeper (with a headlite in the mail)

The 7025's have the same foot print and the same output as the 12AX7, but they are different. Depending on the plates, country of origin, If the plates are square-round-oval and a whole host of other things...

Don't let anyone tell you that they are the SAME TUBES... While they are the same footprint and they are interchangable, they ARE NOT the same tubes. I actually prefer the ECC83s tube.

I started off with a Bass 750, GIII, & S.O.B. A few months later I sold the 750 bought an early Mo' Bass and used that with a GIII all through college:

I'm in the market for a big ben. I've searched and haven't found any quality video's of them in action on the tube. Can anyone link me to a good video where the sound quality is good enough to hear it in the mix?

Or simply a good video of one being played would make me happy just as well.

My "sub" speaker is not on the bottom. I use a single 12 with no horn on top of my dual 12 w/ a horn. I like the horn being lower for a couple of reasons, firstly it rolls off the stage better (to me). I like my "sub" speaker higher because I like less high end and more mud, but I want my overall sound to be tight, clear and clean. I want every note to count. I purposely put my cabinet without the horn up higher.

Sadly, blew the 115 3 days after warranty ran out(they wanted almost 500 for a new speaker)

I wanted more power , so I traded in the 350 for a GK 1001rb(if I coulda got the 750x I woulda)


So...now I got the 410 and a peavey head.
Still love SWR though.
I never knew bass could be so low.
