I think it was on reranch, or maybe the essex uberthread here, someone has successfully reshaped the new headstock into something that looks like a passable "telecaster" headstock. It's a bit small, but not so you'd notice.
The orange color is annoying. I got an SX shorty J a few months back and a shorty rosewood and block neck to put on it. The maple neck that came off is for another project. I've seen people who have used citristrip to remove the orange and leave the poly. The orange must be a top layer.
My two necks are the old decent headstock ones, so I don't know if construction has changed, but I can tell you they're both very well constructed necks. Great fretwork, very solid and "hefty". Straight as an arrow. The block rosewood one went on my shorty Jazz with a set of hipshot ultralights and a set of Chromes. It's almost like cheating it's so insanely easy to play.
