Years ago, when I played in my first band, I got a valuable lesson from the band leader.
I was 16 years old. I had long hair. I was making $300-$500 most weekends playing bars and parties all over NC and VA. It was 1987. I was cocky. You couldn't tell me anything. I had it all figured out.
We were playing a small hotel bar in Franklin, VA. I was singing a little backup vocals so I had a mic. During a little in-between-songs banter, I dropped an F bomb.
They kept going as if nothing had happened. But during the break, we had a talk. I got some lecturing. But the one thing that stuck with me in those speeches was.....
"Man, you'll never offend anyone by NOT cursing. Nobody will ever leave your show saying the band was great.... vocals were tight.... light show was awesome.... and the bass player is dead sexy...... if only they had dropped some F bombs I would have been entertained."
In my more than 30 years of playing in clubs and bars, it has been my policy not to use that kind of language on stage. And, honestly, I rarely do in life. You can apply that wisdom to meetings, conversations, etc. Nobidy will ever walk away from me saying...
"Twofer seemed like a great guy. He looks like a model, seems funny, has his act together, and is one of the most interesting people I have come across in decades. I just wish he had let me hold a GD or an MFer while we were talking."
(Everything else about that quote is absolutely true, by the way. I can't walk through the grocery store without turning down three modeling gigs. Seems like it would be fun. But it's not. Try staying married when you look like me.)
