In the end, as George Carlin pointed out, they're all just words. It's the different meanings and emotional responses they incur that set them apart. As such, I think it's a matter of having some empathy and consideration for those here who find it offensive. You can have your freedom to say whatever you want... just not here. There are plenty of other digital oasis where you can let fly. I have no problem "watching my mouth" while I'm here.

Yeah, not swearing is copulating bovine excrement! The matriarchal fornicators that made those rules are just phalluses (or is that phalli?)!

Seriously though, as a person who can swear fluently in 5 languages, I find it really doesn't add to the conversation in a polite place like this. It is nice that I can come here and be assured that the conversation will remain at least nominally civil with no unnecessary profanity.

I cuss like a sailor in the real world. To the disdain of my lovely mother. But there are different ways to cuss. You can tell by voice inflection someone's intent when they cuss. One person just sounds natural and carefree and the other may sound vile and derogatory. In written text, you do not have that same distinction.

TB feels like the last place on the internet where discussion and disagreement don't turn into a barrage of f-bombs and insults.

Please keep the forum clean.

Talkbass is a community, communities have rules. I actually think not having unrestricted language on here is what keeps it from becoming every other septic tank of a website on the internet, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Ah, the allure and power of a live microphone when we we're young! I have similar story, including the pay structure and timeline, but that's for another thread. I dropped mine in a room full of suits and black dresses and it just lay there like a steaming turd on the stage. It felt like the room dropped ten degrees in temperature. And while nobody scolded or lectured me, they didn't need to. I'm fairly sure that, unless it was a lyric, I haven't sworn on a microphone since.

In addition to the younger players and aspiring bassists, we also seem to have a fairly large praise and worship bassist contingent on this forum, who often venture out of their forums and into the regular forums. Swearing is one thing, but swearing when you know specifically that you may offend someone just makes you a... disagreeable person! Although, I don't understand how using substitute swear words is any different for that crowd. The intent is exactly the same and I'm sure their deity of choice isn't oblivious to their word selection.

To be honest, I prefer the rules that are in place. As a Christian, I am tired of being bombarded by a constant barrage of vulgarity from the media and especially TV.:poop: It is refreshing to be able to come to a forum that does not engage in this behavior. There is a time and place for everything. TB is not the place for vulgarity. :rollno:

The coarsening of language has gotten much worse in recent years, in part, perhaps, because there are persons at the very top of society (not gonna name names, because that would be "political") who seem unable to get through a day without turning the air blue. Even the sainted New York Times now drops the occasional F-bomb. On the whole, I prefer civility. Yes, I swear a lot, but mostly in rehearsal.:D

Cursing for me is usually a lazy substitute for clearer and more accurate words. I'm fine with being forced to find clearer and more accurate language to express myself.

Also, having been around since before the internet, I have seen *every* online community fragment and split into off subgroups because two people conflicted and everyone else took sides. We occasionally upset each other, but in almost 20 years TB has remarkably suffered no such splintering, thus the community continues to benefit from more collective wisdom. And it is probably due at least in part to "strict" rules about politics, religion, and even cursing.

Many people take great offense to the " F bomb". I do not really get that. It is a very efficient intensifier. Something can stink, really stink, or F-in stink. There is no doubt which smells worse.
