Cursing brings images to the mind of the listener that may not be welcome. It's a simple matter of courtesy to refrain from such behavior unless you're relatively sure they don't find it offensive.
To refrain from cursing means generously putting the comfort of others above your own impulses. It is adhering to a standard of behavior that requires restraint and self-control. It sets a higher bar for your behavior, and if you demonstrate you can live up to that higher standard, you have earned more of my respect.

One of my professors once mentioned that people swear or cuss because they are not articulate enough to express themselves properly. I haven't really used much profanity since.

I used to think like the OP. Then a friend of mine explained to me, after I'd dropped a (what I though was) fairly "innocent" word, that her ex used to use that word - before he beat her.

Strong words have hurtful meanings to some people - often they can be harmful in ways most of us don't understand. I agree we're all adults here. Part of growing up, to me, is to learn how to treat everybody nicely.

I love this thread. This thread exemplifies what is good about TalkBass. The OP stated an opinion(to which he/she is entitled) and the vast majority of the responses have been respectful and well thought out responses to it.

agreed that painting is a far, far, FARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR more visceral and primal image than any use of the f-word could be. that painting's in the cleveland museum of art...i had to take a pic of it it was so ridiculous, i was rolling on the ground laughing. what usage of the f-word could come close to something as offensive as that?

your position is that not using profanity is a sign of moral and intellectual superiority, is that not correct?

Most people use an occasional cuss word for emphasis. I’ve read that highly intelligent people swear and use cuss words. We’re adults here, or aspiring adults who interact in the real world. Our language should not be censored on this forum. Most artists are open minded and use creativity in their language and should be able to use all the linguistic tools available. I’m a cunning linguist who needs to use my poetic license.

Swearing does not display the reaches of one’s vocabulary, only the limits.

There is a certain level of civility here, even when people strongly disagree about something. Profanity does nothing but jack up the level of hostility. Go visit any sports-oreinted message board and look at the level of discourse going on between common fans of a team.

Allowing swearing here would be a stupid effing idea.
