Thanks gents! The intro is what I think of as “Comprovised”, where it’s basically sketched out but the details differ each time you play it. Kind of like Getz reportedly did with his solos. The session was great fun and the guys can all really play. I’m very lucky to have this crew as colleagues.

I haven't ever written something with a bass lead so it was a challenge to pull off but I enjoyed putting myself in the hot seat. The long form was inspired by Mingus preference for 16 bar a sections.

Agreed, that is terrific, @ejnachtrab . Broken bones is quite a price to pay for musical inspiration, but at least something beautiful came out of it.

Just curious - do you compose at the piano? Or, What is your process? Thanks.

Thank you! I strongly encourage you to write and to try to find people who are interested in playing original music. I’ll bet that if there are jazz musicians around, there is SOMEONE who’s down, who’s into that weird record you like, or wants to play in odd meters, or whatever it is. I spent a good chunk of my career, such as it is, playing standards in restaurants, standards with singers, all that. It was great for me but at some point I realized that something was really missing. That song, Collarbone, completely kicked my butt, I’m still figuring out how to play it. Anyway, I hope you do it!

Thanks Don! I wrote that tune completely at the piano. It’s a mixed bag for me though. I’m a hack piano player on a good day. Some things come to me from the bass line or a melody I find on the bass, but at some point I usually have to sit down and bash it out at the piano. I write everything out by hand, no computer. I’m happy to talk about it more.

I’m going to avoid breaking any more bones though… hopefully that’s not necessary for the inspiration

Hey, you me same! I do sometimes wish there was a transpose button… also I have a note book where I cut up the pages because I didn’t want to rewrite a section but the bridge was garbage, photocopier and tape… I forgot all about and then later realized that I had no original chart, just a bunch of slips of paper…

Here’s another tune of mine. This one is from our new album and was written completely from the idea of the bass line. I’ve been into the idea of switching the 4/3 sides in 7 and thinking of different note groupings in odd meter walking. I came up with the melody while I was on a walk thinking about the bassline. Enjoy.
