I've been using the Fender "originals" also. I have a set of Barts in P/J that I've been wanting to try out. Favorite strings are GHS sub-zero boomers and the Dean Markley Blue Steel. Both seem to last forever and maintain tone.
Have you tried cryogenic treated strings?
Couldn't say, been a while. I just remember not feeling satisfied with what I was hearing.
What kind of P/J?
Sound slightly brighter to my ear, but appear to resist corrosion very well.
What strings are you using?
Squier VM Precision. Nice bass, P pup sounds real good. Steve will like it
Did you say Bacon?
Salt air tends to accelerate all corrosion. The guitar strings tend to go faster, but I've found that the cryogenics seem to last longer.
What's BSO?
No, I usually buy off amazon (gift cards) or from Elderly. I'll have to check out BSO. I have some tape wounds for the Thunderchief, but haven't put them on yet.
Have you tried a Thunderchief?
I had an Applause AE-40 that I completely hated, but really wanted something for playing acoustic with friends on a 12-string, 6 string and mandolin. The Applause couldn't keep up. I was about to give up on it and read some really good things on the Thunderchief. It was a little out of my price range, but I did it anyway, and it was completely worth it. The tone is great and it projects really well. The other guys can hear it while playing. Its great. I love the neck, feels a lot like my P. The only downside I have is the body width, takes some getting used to, but sits better than the AE-40 (round back), that wouldn't stay put to save it's life. When I'm done playing it goes back in the case, because it looks like it would mark up easily.
Try any ABGs?
Played a Dean in the store, and was surprised how good it sounded acoustic. Haven't heard many good things on the brand

I did try an Epi El Capitan that a friend had and a Michael Kelly Firefly. Both were comparable in price and feel. There was a Rick Turner Renaissance that I was looking at for a while, but decided to pass.
Any experience with those?
No, ABG don't seem very popular here. The local guy has a Breedlove, might check it out.
How about an upright?
I played an upright once, had no idea what I was doing at the time. Keep looking at the ones that show up on Elderly's site, but that's just GAS.

I have an unmistakable and unexplainable GAS for one.
Probably crap the first time it needed a string change.
