TalkBass Trade Gone Bad

Yeah that's sad. Most of my current gear came from TBers and they have all been fantastic to work with.

I really dig relics done tastefully. And that ain't it. Try to swap back. It will bother you as long as you own it if you don't.

two things come to mind here-

-if this was not a road worn bass, he wouldn't have a case at all.
-put up a bigger fight and he will likely cave in to your request.
seems these days people lie and cross their fingers hoping to get away with misrepresentation, but then sack up later to make it right.

NOT Cool!

Whomever made the trade with you needs to make it right, either by swapping basses back or cash compensation. I have never had any trouble with anyone in the classifieds on purchases or trades. I agree with the earlier poster the classifieds here are built on trust. If we loose that trust we might as well be freakin eBay.
keep in mind folks that this is a great site-
-we have seen the generosity of TBers help people out in need ; we have seen TBers give basses away to less fortunate; we have a great thing here and need to protect that integrity.
go thru due diligence and then call them out.

If the bass was mis-reperesented or even if one party or the other isn't happy with the deal, I would expect both parties involved to be willing to return said basses or at least make it right by compensating the other party (if agreed upon)... That is if there was an obvious discrepancy in the description of one of the instruments and it sure sounds this is one of those cases.

YMMV.

Moonshine :bassist:
I've bought, sold and traded here. Twice I was bit disappointed, but in neither case was the bass mis-represented like this. From my end I ALWAYS send lots of high def pics direct to the buyer/trader with my own honest assessment. Life is too short to cheat people -- it will always come back to you somehow.

If the other party didn't disclose the chunks of wood missing and magic marker paint job, in addition to not providing any actual close up photos of the bass, I'd consider that a deceptive maneuver on his/her behalf. If the close-up pics weren't divulged during the trade, then I'd be demanding my old bass back. Furthermore, I'd be asking he reimburse my shipping costs. I'd give said person the BOD.....but even then, it's hard not to think this wasn't intentional.

Man, that really sucks. And from his initial response, it doesn't sound like an "untrade" is a possibility. Unfortunately, this might have to be chalked up as a lesson learned.

I wish some sellers were a bit more honest with their ads. I don't know how many times I've found out through PMs with sellers that what they had advertised as "less than a year old" was in actuality "I've had it for less than a year (but have no idea how old the bass really is.)"

Good luck.

There's always the possibility of this guy caving in to having his reputation on the forum (and subsequent chance of selling any more (shoddy) basses here) ruined via a simple outing (which, as has been suggested before, would be best to talk to mods about first). I'm sure if this guy plans on selling more basses and this was a one-off POS deal he was trying to pass off on the classifieds after being scammed himself, he'll rethink his attitude and accept the 'untrade'.

Then again, some people are really scummy. This definitely seems to be a 'lesson learned' scenario, but hopefully it has a somewhat happy ending for the OP's sake.

Name the bass Beaver Fever, seeing as it's covered in all those infected rodent bite wounds. Then heave Beaver Fever and a cleaver at Mr. Deceiver while forcing him to listen to Justin Bieber. That bass sucks man, don't take no guff.

Wow, that's a shame. But, I must say it kind of doesn't suprise me much. I have had similar dealings. My feeling is,
A) people really don't know, rare but, sometimes plausible.
B) like said earlier in the thread, people just cross their fingers and hope the receiving party just doesn't know any better.

I have for the most part resorted back to going to the store to play the instruments I'm interested in. Also, when I trade or sell I always tell the other party if your not happy we can undo the trade, no problem.

It is hard believe that the person who traded this actually thought all those gouges came from the factory, especially a regular on TB. On it being older than represented, it is possible he bought it NOS and wasn't told. That happened to me once; I bought a bass represented as new and found out it was NOS when I went to sell it.

My guess is that the guy who made the trade with the OP got this travesty of a bass in a sight unseen trade himself and did this in an effort to pass it on.
