I've been going back and forth over this for a while now. I have, basically, zero time (I know, I know ...everyone else is busy too) but if I don't start doing something now, its going to be a real problem in the not too distant future. My 14.5 year old niece wants to work out and has her parent's blessing to do so, but she needs guidance and a ride, both of which I can provide (I was an absolute gym rat 10-15 years ago). Since her parents are OK with her going, but don't really want to take her, I have volunteered to be her ride. And, having to take her puts me in a position where I will HAVE to go. It seems I need that kind of obligation to get started, which is probably a pretty sad commentary on where I'm at, but I'm trying to keep a positive attitude.
Sad thing is, I've already lost weight once in my life. About 12 years ago, when I turned 20, I had a minor car accident which gave me a pretty good case of whiplash, and it still effects me to this day. That led me to stop working out and not care so much about what I ate and I gained about 30 lbs over the course of a year. When that happened, I re-dedicated myself to working out and eating smart and lost every bit of weight that I had gained. So, on the positive, I know I have done it before and have a good idea of how to do it again. On the negative, I know how much work it was back then, and I'm not 20 anymore so it will be more difficult to do, and I have to lose a lot more than 30 lbs this time around.
I plan to visit a few gyms in my area over the weekend and find something affordable for both of us. Since my main goal is weight loss (I used to have the opposite problem, too skinny), I plan to do lots of cardio (love the elliptical machine) and light weights with high reps. For diet, I plan to drink LOTS more water and less of everything else, and try to cut back on processed carbs and excessively fatty foods, but I'm gonna try to make small, gradual, sustainable changes to my diet.
I don't know my weight at the moment, but I know it is in the 225-230 lb. range. I'll try to give a more exact weight over the next couple of days. I figure, all told, the whole process should a take about 1-1.5 years to lose all the weight that I need to lose.
