I played a modern worship service tonight with a Gretsch G5440LS using La Bella black tapes. They loved it... I love the mellow tone. It is a very “upright-like” tone that works for some songs but not all. I guess I’m saying, don’t rule them out, but know where they live.

I have a set La Bella 750N on my six string fretless as a trial.
That is good to know, I just wanted to try them out and D'addario is what the store had. The D'addarios were thumpy and scooped sounding on my bass. And maybe great with a bright pickup which is the opposite of what I have. I also have some Copper tapes coming so when these come off I'll try those as a comparison. The rounds sounded best so far but I wanted something softer on my fingers for the time being.
I've had tapes on a couple of basses for two years or so. I have to say, they were more clacky and buzzy than I thought they would be.
I was looking for more of a warmer sound. Does a coated flatwound string exist? The wrapped round isn't working for me, so I'm back to flats. Just my experience.

I don't know, I went on vacation and don't go home yet for a few days. I accidentally ordered the white gold la bella tape wounds and those are on the bass right now. They sound a lot better imo.
LaBella 750N’s for me on my Sandberg Electra VS4. They sound phenomenal!
I've played with Rotosound BLACK NYLON COVERED FLATWOUND RS886LD for a little while and really enjoyed them especially the lack of string noise. Recently, though, I've picked up a set of GHS Boomers on a whim. I have played and am currently playing with them now and enjoy them as well. I like both sets of strings for different reasons but the biggest reason I like the GHS is for the crispy, bright sound it gives. I also like the traction I get on them, not too fast like the Rotosounds.
My question is: are there strings out there that have the bright crispyness of roundwound string but are smooth and low tension like tapewound?

Try the labella whites - very bright. I have their blacks which are still suprisingly bright. Probably as bright as most pressure wounds.
I agree with @Loring... I found the Roto black tapes to be darker than the La Bella black tapes. I also didn't like the D'addario black tapes as much as I'd hoped. I also have a set of the La Bella White Gold tapes and they are very "round" like in their tone. I've heard the coppers are too. The Palin whites I had were nice in tone, but too floppy on my Fender so I took them off. I'd say if you like the smooth feel, but want the round sound, then I'd try one of the white tapes.

I had these on for a little bit... and decided to take one last whack at rounds. Once I (rather quickly) killed them, I realized that dead rounds don’t sound nearly as good as the tapes... so why not play strings that feel like the finest of butter? Man it feels good to bend to my heart’s content without feeling like I’m fretting the Golden Gate Bridge.
I seriously doubt this bass will ever see anything but tapes ever again. Now to re-adjust my hands...

Curious about what gauge your plain white nylons were. I bought a set of the light gauge (.50 G string) and they were way too floppy for me. Are your Golds the same gauge as your whites?

I believe those are the same gauges. I don't mean to make the golds sound like there were super taught, they aren't, but for whatever reason the whites were extra floppy on my Fender. The golds are installed on my Kiesel JB5 and maybe the scale is different or the mass of the gold is more so the strings are less floppy. I liked the golds, but not the whites. I was considering more tapes, but I think I've started to fall back in love with flats. I have a set on a couple of basses as a trial. The tension is such that I may note keep going. Time will tell.
