TB trade gone bad. Am I crazy? Am I wrong?

If I decided to go with number 2, chances are that would be considered a hero for standing up to a bully because I was the first to get my story out there and accumulated an angry mob to shoot down any logic and reason.

I don't think we're on the same page here. I was discussing in general, not in relation to the OP. The cost of shipping has little to do with the OP getting hosed. Also, in your hypothetical situation the buyer is agreeing to the shipping cost of $20, that is not getting "the item plus shipping". What I am saying is that when a seller says "cost of item + shipping" that does not mean "cost of item + my cost to get a box, pack it up, send it out as well as the cost of material." You know the item has to be shipped so why act inconvenienced by somebody buying your item? For the record, when people buy items off of me I always incorporate shipping into the total cost. I know I have to ship them item so, in my mind, it just makes more sense and it simplifies things.

See the thread linked above. Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. The only way for a member to get banned over a classified deal is if the law steps in.

I do the same thing. Why bother with $700 + $40 shipping. When it can just be $740....no shipping charge.

It's all the same in the end i suppose.

Without the original emails and the other person's side of the story, it is hard to say for sure that the issue is with the hardware.

Maybe the OP completely glazed over the part where the other person said "I'm keeping the black hardware" - I don't know. Just saying that there is more to this story than we are being allowed to see.

To put you on the same book and page that I am reading - From the first post:

...and finally lied about the shipping cost (told me he paid $78 and in actuality only paid $41,)

Just because you figure the cost of shipping (box, materials, time, bus fair, etc.) into the total cost, maybe the person's expenses for shipping came out to be the missing 37-.

Like I said before without the original emails and the other person's side of the story, this is just pure speculation on my part.

I'll gladly post some screen shots once this is resolved with the TB admins.

But for now I can assure you that at no point in time did the other party say anything about keeping the black hardware or removing it.

I was not even terribly concerned that he may have overpaid for shipping, my concern was two fold:

1. After he didn't ship the day we agreed upon, i requested expedited shipping. (3 day over 4 day) so I could have it for a gig. I offered to pay the difference from regular ground shipping. He quoted me $195.73 which is just clearly wrong. As priority two day mail on a a "normal" bass in a standard bass sized box should be right around $60. I ship a lot. I'm a preferred seller on Reverb even.

2. The bass was then shipped ground without contacting me further. He said he paid $78 for it, he actually just paid $41, which means, the upgraded shipping that I was willing to pay for was perfectly reasonable. Again, I don't really care how much he actually paid, I just don't like getting lied to. This whole point is acting more as a "character witness" than actual "evidence of the crime."

The only difference between what you get and pictures the seller presented of it are:
1. Differences he called out before you agreed to the deal.
2. Dust and fingerprints on the item.

Anything else is fraud. Yes, that is the word for it.

How does small claims court work across state lines? I'd ask for the hardware, or the cost to replace the hardware, difference between shipping charge and actual shipping cost. Or both basses returned with the other guy paying for all shipping cost in both directions.

Well, TB is doing the right thing.

They've given the guy options after reviewing the case.
1. Send me the parts.
2. Pay me for the parts he didn't send.
3. Trade basses back.
3. Get banned.

He gets to choose 1 of the 4. Not bad TB. That's pretty much all the power they have, and they're using it all. I'm quite satisfied with the Admin's promptness and resolution procedures. Even if the guy says "screw you," and gets himself banned. I'd be happy enough. Sometimes, a war whose spoils are only of the moral variety, is still a war worth fighting.
