TC Electronic BG250 Club (Part 2)

I have the BH250, which is the same amp, I believe. It has a fan. I does make some sound. When powering it up, it sounds like the fan turns on full, and then it is audible in a silent environment. But after a few seconds, it spins down to a level where it is barely audible even when everything is silent. I am a hifi freak, too, and trust me, I am pretty intolerant when it comes to such noise, but this fan is not loud. I guess it can be, though, if it gets very hot. When playing very loud, it is no issue no matter what, but I haven't tried it in an environment with a really hot ambient temperature.

NB: I use my BH250 with an Eden EX112 4ohm cabinet, and that is also a really lightweight combination with only one more cable to hook up.

BTW: What is MS-70B? Do you mean MS-60B or maybe the MS-70CDR?

Appreciate the input. I already made an order, so hearing it has a fan made me very nervous. What you write alleviates the nerves a lot! 8) I got a lightweight 1x12 waiting for the amp, I'm hoping to get a nice bottom and clear mids. Together the are about 22kg, ~45lb, which in my books is amazing! (not expecting massive pressure levels)

And yes, I got into typoing, I meant the Zoom MS-60B.

Used mine at a gig last Friday, small funk band, instrumental. Sounded much better than the university-owned GK MB210 combo that I practice through on campus. The MB210 is super boomy until I've got the low knob turned to about 8 o'clock. I had everything flat on the BG250 and was actually told to turn the lows up just a hair.

I got the amp cheap on Craigslist and the guy didn't include the USB cable required to update the firmware (amp is version 1), so I got a mini-USB cable on Amazon thinking it would work. Nope, mini is the wrong size. I sent a tech request to TCE to ask what size connector I need.

There are no numbers. They were voted down (by me) at the time that the club was run as a brutal dictatorship.

There are, however, some rules...the official language of the club was made Swedish by proclaimation.

Silence!

Also, all club members are required to change their underwear every half-hour. Underwear are to be worn on the outside so we can check. Furthermore, since I haven't done this in a while, once again, all children of club members who are under 16 years old are now 16 years old...

If you're set on having a number, perhaps stage a coup.

Hi everyone… I'll try and be as short and complete in my query as possible.

I wanted to buy the RS450 and a RS212 as my new rig. Unable to play any of it, I've read all I could, or could tolerate, to help me choose without trying it out. I'm not a fan a buying much of anything without a physical inspection.
My view has changed with regards to the above setup. I've decided to buy a combo and call it a day. Right now I've left my band and moved across the country so, I haven't a need for anything more at this time.

My worry is with the BG's quality control, maybe that should read TC Electronic's QC. The issues folks have posted here (also regarding the BG combo's) gives me pause. Fortunately there are 3 available in my area to try.
Any insight on what to look for/test in terms of the units quality. The obvious stuff doesn't need to be stated. Just wondering if there are any weird things like combining tone print with volume at blank level creates a gremlin to appear, stuff like that.

While I'd point out that, judging from my experience and reading of forum posts, I don't believe that TCE has a particularly bad record (relative to everything else out there), I also wouldn't try to sell anyone or encourage them against their leanings.

I'd think that if you're going in worried and with pause, then it would be a good idea to just find a brand/model that you can buy with a warm fuzzy feeling (and that's not intended with any flippancy). My old boss was really fond of the phrase "Life's too short." I think that applies here...there are too many options to trouble yourself with pre-purchase angst over other people's experiences. People try to gauge risk by reading forum posts, but IMO that's a lost cause (but I've been guilty too - I wouldn't feel good buying a used PF500). Any brand or model can have lemons and you can end up with one. Even if only 1 in 5,000 has any problem, you can end up as that 1.

No one can tell you whether an (presumably good) amp is going to fail or not. Electronics and processors in these types of amps are subject to types of failures that simply do not lend themselves to being discovered by looking or testing for them on inspection.

In terms of odds, the glass mostly full side of this is that no matter what amp you choose, the chances are "good" (whether 99% or 95% or even 90%) that you'll be fine. Buy new and get a warranty, so your only risk, for some period, is inconvenience.

Damn, I have to buy some underwears... But I didn't find any in the classifieds.

The power gets to me sometimes. Anyway, I consider you to be part of my regime, so the underwear rule doesn't apply to you, and any children you may have, who are under 16 years old, do not have to be 16 years old...they are now 12 years old, unless they are between 12 and 15, in which case, they are now 16 years old.

Ha, not at all. I think we all (forum readers) go through the same processes to varying degrees...trying to gather stats from posts and turn them into actuarial tables to assess buying risk. In the end, it seems these end up largely as gut decisions anyway. The "stats" we gather don't really tell us what we'd like to think they do. We form opinions on the perceived "reliability." We blur that together with the concepts of risk and failure rates and either do or don't feel comfortable.

But when you step back and think about it, reliability (as consumers buying one amp are most interested in it) really only applies to the amp in your hands...self-interest rules. You don't get a single amp that's 98% reliable or 94% reliable...it either works for you or it fails. Are you going to feel any different if you're in a group of two out of a hundred who get lemons versus being in a group of six out of a hundred? I don't think so. Either way, you got a lemon. I can't see responding to that with "Well, it's much more reliable...look, the failure rate is one third on the other one."
