TC Sub 'N' Up Octaver! New Octave Pedal!

Yeah, the app isn't much better on IOS. Still checks for updates on startup and it takes forever. A PITA if I'm at a gig with bad reception. Supposedly, they are adding peer-to-peer sharing and saving custom presets, but there is no ETA. I haven't really experienced the other glitches. But, it'd be nice if they would get the wrinkles ironed out with the app.

I'm back in the Sub'n'up gang. I have a mini on the way. Luckily, the two main reasons I want it are factory toneprints--a simple octave up to use with my Mel9 and an organ tone (that will be modified by heavily by other things like an H9 Leslie).

I'm not really looking for the TonePrint feature to work... it's a bummer. Haven't gotten the beam to work on any of my TCe pedals. Android+ Fender P/J. All it manages to do is make a very unpleasant sound come from my phone. Relieved to hear I'm not the only one having problems with the system.

Everyone I know who works on android apps hates it because you can never be certain that there won't be some hardware or software reason why it won't work. I know there is a phase issue on some Android phones that affect the Source Audio Neuro app. Maybe it's the same issue you are having with your phone.
 
wondering if anyone has had a chance to try the Sub n Up in this context yet - using just the polyphonic "octave up" with their bass guitar to cop some fake electric guitar sounds, particularly for fast tremolo picking/chord work. i've used both the EHX Mirco POG in the past, and am currently using the EHX Pitchfork for this in front of a guitar preamp/distortion pedal, and it works pretty good, but am always curious about what else works better. also wondering how if the Nano POG sounds any different than the Micro POG or Pitchfork in this context, or if it would sound the same as those.
just wanted to update folks about using the sub n up for "octave up/fake guitar" sounds using a bass. i ended up grabbing a mini and it has now taken the place of the EHX Pitchfork that was in that spot before, and a Micro POG that was in that spot prior to that. i'm running the sub n up mini in stock poly mode with the up octave about 90% up and the dry and sub octave all the way down. running that signal into a Peavey 5150 in a box (AMT P2), i actually get a pretty convincing heavily distorted guitar sound when tremolo picking. you can hear a bit more of the ringy synthy sounds when picking single notes/chords more slowly, but not any worse than the Pitchfork or Micro POG. on top of all that, the sub n up mini is much smaller than both of those. pretty happy with it for all of those reasons.

I had problems in the beginning as well.

My basses all have dual humbuckers. I solo the bridge PUP, and turn off the rest of my pedals. My phone is an iPhone 7+, and I rest the bottom of my phone against the strings, directly over the PUP. With the pedal that I’m applying the TonePrint to on, I hit the beam button on my phone.

It works 95% of the time on the first shot. Always by the second.

If I have any other pedal on before I beam it, it drops to less than 50% success.

I use the subn'up poli in the loop of a Superego to make bowed cello sounds, but the best octave up so far in the Superego is EH Canyon on octave or shimmer. You can choose a very fast octave time like digital latency would have anyway or one that follows after the note slower, repeating or not. As a standalone octave up I like the Whammy Ricochet too.

I find the Tone Print works better on some instruments than others--not really great on my SR500F--could be the active electronics though--works on my passive bass & sometiems it works better on one pickup than the otehr...
 
Ha! I had no idea that there are also beaming issues, so sad to hear that. I mean, after all other stuff I've mentioned, if beaming toneprint would not work reliably, I'd just plain return it to the store.
I am using Xiaomi MI 1A and worked so far with my BTB705 (with exaggerated highs on the preamp) and Aguilar DCB pickups. Come to think of it, maybe the turned-up highs help because the communication is using ~10kHz and 6kHz. Make sure your tone pot is not set to low or volume for that matter (basic passive volume pot starts by cutting highs).
One idea (I still haven't tried) is using my Boss RC-3 AUX input connected with a stereo cable to my phone (or a pocket MP3 player). An approach of inserting a hard-wired signal would avoid many factors:
- phone volume and amplifier,
- phone speaker,
- amount of air between the speaker and pickup
- pickups
- guitar volume and tone pots
- cable quality (high capacitance cables eat the high freqs)
You could also use a preamp with AUX in (meant for practice or backing tracks) or a Boss LS-2.

Now, that mp3 player idea would require for you to gain access to sound files stored in the toneprint app, I will try to do that for my needs anyway.

You can’t hardwire your phone to the pedal. It won’t work.

The TonePrint info gets loaded into the pedal by altering the magnetic field in the pickup, exactly the same way as an old fax machine or 56K modem used to work.

Honestly, that anyone figured out how to do this is a stroke of pure genius.

I’m still not sure that will work. It’s not the sound that inserts the TonePrint. The sound activates the magnetic field by the speaker’s vibration in it. It’s why it works in very loud environments. Background noise doesn’t affect the magnetic field - the speaker’s vibration does.
 
...and sound, transferred via magnetic field, from speaker to pickup, is still electricity. Induction or not, it hits the pedal as AC. I was sure it would work, but just to be able to make claims, tested it before taking this image.
Not only does it work but it works more reliably and without that phone-to pickup targeting which I'm sure is not too sexy on stage.
I could have recorded this sample to the looper as a one-shot clip and just be done with the horrible TC app and the extra wires.
