Team Trace Elliot! Part II

Hey fellow TBers. I've been looking into Trace Elliot amps. I have a Spector NS4CRFM and want to know what hey sound like. Also, would a Spector running through a Sansamp DI sound good through a trace? And what's a trace sound like? How clear is it? I like lows and highs, not a huge fan of mids, but sometimes I do. Thanks, Nate. :)
If you're talking solid state trace amps:

some have a blendable valve in the pre amp for a nice warmup of the general sound, it doesn't do grinding overdrive.

then they all have at least one signature trace preshape EQ option, some have a 2nd milder version as well. It scoops mids.

Then you get the graphic EQ, they are footswitchable.

Most, if not all, have a blend control to "swing" EQ from high prominent to low end prominent, quite handy sometimes.

So there you go, it sounds like a bass but better. Very clear. Me like much. How much colour is up to you with the EQ.

The SMX series has discrete hi and low compression also.

If you want more grind you can add that with a sansamp pedal. I haven't tried it with mine but a RBI probably goes good in the FX loop of a trace. That would give you all your tone to the FOH via the RBI's DI, with level control but possibly uncompressed.

What's everyone think of the new Trace amps? As good as the old ones? I love my Trace, and for 150 watts its often too loud, but I wouldn't mind having a new higher powered head. :D

The only "new" one I have is the 715 combo. 200 watts @ 4ohms, no extension. It's a little green monster. Great tone and versatility, especially with the built in compression.

Compared to an older 715 combo I had in the mid 90's, I like it better. Quieter, louder (more power, obviously), & more options on it. Same heavy weight though. :)

I've played thru a 1210 combo for about 10 minutes with a bass that wasn't mine (I was able to set the EQ, etc to something similar to the way my AH130 is set, tho), so these comments/opinions may not necessarily reflect station management...

That said, I wasn't all that impressed - it sounded like an imitation of a Trace amp; a bit...I dunno, thinner or something. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I expected either. I can say that I might have liked it better if I didn't have mine already.

How about a number for the team!!
I can't believe it have taken me almost ten years to start playing TE amps again, but I am glad to be doing so!!
Paired with my Stingrays, I am in tone heaven!!

I love em almost as much as my AH1200SM...
If I could mate the -12 tube preamp into my AH1200SM .. THAT would be the system! :D
The power and sound management of the AH1200SM with a blendable tube preamp AND retain the black light...

But, I'd lose the 2nd preset EQ and a couple other things that I prefer that unfortunately the -12 doesn't have....:(

Well, shoot... I just plugged the AH600-12 in to my stack to make sure it was working as it should.....:hmm:

Well....

It does! Not sure I wanna sell it now... Just kidding. :D LOL...

The neighbors were head banging to the bass line I was playin while washing their car! :hyper::cool:

I think you're gonna be very happy you snatched this one up.:hyper:

Ok, Trace Team, so far I love my rig. Anybody care to elaborate on their favorite settings on the 12-Band EQ models?
I am in the experimentation stage.

For the record, I use single H and dual H Stingray 4-stringers!

I an kinda liking the Doug Wimbish vibe currently...Peaks for the 60Hz, 100Hz, 2.6kHz and 5kHz sliders...valleys for the 30Hz, 340Hz, 660Hz and 15kHz.

Anyone got some can't miss settings??

I just got back from gigging with my AH350SMX and I must say " My Trace Elliot Kicks ass"
My Eden 4x10 likes it too.

I just sold the identical amp to a friend. Last Saturday I filled in for him and used his (= my old) head for one set. Loved it once again.

For the second set, swapped in one of those new-fangled Ampeg PF500 heads I bought to back up my tube head. It sounded right nice as well. But it lacked the "oomph" or the balls of the Trace.

There must be something to the arguments I've read about how those heavy transformers add transient power or whatever it's called that the new class D amps don't have.

The "X" series Trace heads are gems. And available at reasonable prices now that everyone is opting for handbag amps.

That's the thing with Trace Elliot...
There is no "ONE" setting.
With the multitude of tonal capabilities you get with Trace Elliot Amplification... You can get whatever you want so, there is no need for a "do all" setting especially if you're playing a SPECTOR bass:D.
I do however, use the Preset 1 and blend the graphic eq scooped a bit with emphasis on the low end.

Just picked up a Trace Elliot Boxer 30. Price that I couldn't refuse, but it needs a big cleaning because of the previous owner's cat. Hair was even all over the speaker, especially the tacky edges. That's mostly clean now, thanks to packing tape and a golf club brush, but the fur on the outside of the amp either needs a few baths and a shave, or complete removal. The amp is spending the night in the shed until I get a chance to really clean it up. Pictures to follow, once complete.

I did turn it on first, just to make sure it worked fine before I started cleaning it. Loud little fella!
