Congrats on the Twin Valve! I saw that very amp on Georgia craigslist and emailed the seller asking if shipping was an option, never heard back. I watched it on eBay but ultimately decided against bidding. You got it for a great price.

Yeah, the Celestion 15" speaker on BAS would be the ideal replacement, but at $150 + $80 shipping I think you could find something equivalent or better for that price. That' a heavy little combo, how about a neo speaker with similar performance characteristics? Check out Invalid Link Removed or http://avatarspeakers.com/speaker separates.htm ...

Thanks for that. I thought the price would jump in the last 2 or 3 minutes of the auction, so I put in my high bid ($350) and much to my surprise that was enough.

The $80 shipping for the 15" seemed like a mistake to me -- especially since the shipping on the 10" speakers was only $15. The rep advised me it was indeed an error (only applies for international shipping) and to go ahead and place the order and he would refund me the difference.

The Twin Valve head is an all tube 115 watt unit.

The combo weighs in ~65 pounds, with 2 spring loaded handles on each side.

I'm gonna wait till I play with it for a while before I figure out if I leave it as it is or if I take the cotton out. Any opinions on this sort of stuffing?

Stuffing or Batting?

First thing I did was add quilt batting to the interior walls of my 1524. I also have been experimenting with adding port covers and stuffing. I found for my purposes the batting definitely helped it sound a bit clearer but I ended up removing the stuffing. I also have some drain pipe stoppers plugging my port holes. I like it best with all 4 plugged or 3/4. It loses some volume but I don't mind.

Glad to hear that someone else experimented with this as well. I think it's batting but it may be stuffing, I'm not quite sure. By now, the sound is great and I don't know how I could make it any better. I guess I'll have to wait until I feel like experimenting too, if I want to make myself an idea of what this batting thing really does.

Can someone tell me the best Trace preamp for the $$$?
Is the gp12 smx really good? I'm new to trace stuff but have heard that the older models are better than the newer.

I'm reposting this from earlier as I corrected the angle of the original pic. My Trace Elliot AH500X, 1048 and 1528 cab + my ESP LTD B-206SM... my Boss ME-50B and Pitchblack tuner are just out of frame.

Guys in the band who have the practice room adjacent to our room came over last night saying that they wanted to see "The Green Mountain that is sooo damn loud and low" and walked up to my amp. I apologized about the volume and they said, "No dude don't be sorry!" and I offered to turn up (the input volume is on 4 and the output volume is on 3, and I always cut through the rest of the band with no problem). The guy's in the other band said that they didn't have the bowels to take bass any louder or lower than it was. BWAAAA HA HA HA HA! Trace Elliot HEAVEN!

I think the GP12smx is every bit as good as an old MK5 or series 6 plus it has the dual band compressor. The tube in the GP12smx sounds nice but really doesnt sound any better than the older models that didnt use tubes. It definitely sounds just as good. The only older pre that in my opinion sounds better than the GP12smx is the GP12XV. The V Type pre is a gem but you really cant compare it with the other Trace stuff its really a totally different animal. The only Trace pre amp that I think falls a little short of all the others is the GP7sm which is from the same era as the GP12smx, there is nothing wrong with it, its just that all the others sound much much better.

Driving efficient cabinets, that amp is more than enough.

Master output never goes anywhere near being opened up on mine.

Do you have both channel levels the same, running stereo I assume?

Yes, running stereo full range with low imp cables. The low end is awesome - the lows never roll off and are always as articulate as the higher freqs. The guy who sold it to me on TB had an Aguilar DB750 (a DAMN nice amp) and he swore that side by side the AH500X had more low end articulation than the DB750. It's an incredible amp - but since you've got one you know this! :D I think I've had the output stage at 6 once - just to see what would happen. The US Geological Service went on alert.

Hey guys, turning to you for advice once again. I bought my GP7SM250 and it sounds good with my 1524 cab but I can't seem to get the sound I had with my Series 6 GP7. It's not that I don't like it, maybe I just haven't played with it long enough to get used to it. Of course I can't expect to have the same sound, but I think I didn't get that "novelty" feeling you usually get when trying a new amp. Once again, maybe it's just a matter of time.

On the other hand, there's an AH300 SMC GP7 up for sale and I was wondering if there's much of a difference with the GP7SM250. Would you say there is a noticeable difference between the two? Is it better? Should I upgrade?

So I'm Team Trace member number 209...

If any kind should out the can confirm that this is indeed a 200 watt RMS, 8ohm cab it would be wonderful. As you can see all of the specs have faded off the back plate. The measurements in case that helps are 18.5" W x 24" T x 17" D not including the rubber feet. I love this thing and I want another!

It's definitely an 1153. 200W and 8 Ohms. I have its twin here.
