Team Trace Elliott Pt 3

Hey!

New guy speaking here!

I was wondering if some of you guys could give me some more information about the Trace Elliot gp12xv preamp.

I bought this preamp, together with a Trace Elliot RA300 poweramp, a Trace Elliot 1508 200 Watt cabinet, and a Trace Elliot 2108H.

I looked over 10 google pages, to find something about this preamp, found some stuff about it (rare?) but I was wondering if one of you had some experience with this preamp.
Also, I saw different prices for this preamp, which differ from $225 to €400. Anyone knows what's a good price for the gp12xv?

Cheers,
Emiel

I'm sorry for my mistakes, I'm Dutch, so I don't speak English fluently.

I meant that I saw the preamp on different advertisement sites for different prices, like on one website, someone asked $225 for it, but on another site, another one asks €400. Hope you understand me now?

What exactly do you mean with FYI.

I'm sorry for the mistakes on the models, my bad:hmm:

I hope someone can give me some information!:)

No sorry's necessary I think, Tracebass was just offering info on how to tell what is what as far as speaker cabs. "FYI" means "for your information", so you were just getting some new information about that nomenclature thing is all. :)

Don't know the preamp or what it's worth myself, but if it's a Trace preamp and goes for the equivalent of $200 or so US, I'd do it. :bassist:

What do you want to know about the preamp? Have you bought it or not? What speakers are in the cabs?

US pricing on used Trace gear is very low compared with the rest of the world.

Most basses will go fine in the passive input, if you find the red light is coming on a lot turn down the input or go to the active input if you're turning down below about 4. The idea is to get the green lighting up consistently.

The preamp has massive clean output headroom to cope with any amplifier. Your trace amp will be driven into clipping past 4 according to the manual I got with my 250.

The EQ is dangerous at the low end. The trace manual encourages cutting the low lows to get loud without destroying the speakers. EQ balance control is easy to figure out.

It's the same manual for anything with an SMX front end. You should be able to find a pdf to download at British Audio.

If you have 1x15 and 2x10 I would use the biamp function. If you need to go really loud then full range on both nets more loudness at the cost of some fidelity.

Play about with the 15 by itself to see how loud it will go. Mine is 300W and goes well down to a low D with 30Hz eliminated and 40 Hz cut hard, ymmv. Do same with the 2x10.

You will find one complains before the other but you have only one EQ. I sometimes use my swr 2x10 with the 15, eq'd for the 2x10 with less uber lows.

To some extent you can control power to each cab with the amps but in the heat of a gig it won't be easy to hear. You're working in a small range on the green knobs ,ie gets going at 1 and all over at 4. Somewhere in the meaty spot between 2 and 3.5 your cabs will be giving up.

Another reason to biamp is the mids are cleaner. I would keep the crossover low and always use the 2x10 with the speakers vertical for best sound dispersion in the room.

BTW, the Trace cab numbering scheme is not consistent. 1513 is a smaller version of 1518. A few pages above someone says they have a 1528, but I gathered all the 2x15 were 4 ohm, I could be wrong.

This all just Information...

The two sizes of Pre-Peavey era Trace Elliot cabs for the single 15" cab were
1518 and 1153T..

The 1518 matches the 1048/H (4x10") for cab dimensions.

The 1153T matches 1028/H (2x10") cab dimensions.

There is also a very rare 1548 (4x15") cab living in the Los Angelas, CA area, btw.

Among all the TE gear I own or have owned, and that's a a lot ...I have owned 4 1528 cabs all being 2x15"@8 ohms...

That said...
The current 1528 (2x15") cab is an
8 ohm cab...
clip from TE.com..

  • 500 Watts RMS, 8 Ohms.
  • Two 15'' (381mm) specially designed Celestion® speakers.
  • Two Neutrik® Combination Speakon® / 1/4" (6.35mm) jack connectors.
  • Cabinet tuned, with bottom unobstructed slot, to 32Hz.

Anybody have an older 1518 cab they're looking to move? ;-)

I recently got one of the older 200W versions with the two large 6" (I think) tube ports that go through the grill but no racing stripes. Running my Hartke HA3500 through it...my god am I loving my sound now!

I will post a photo later on tonight and maybe someone will issue me a number...

So I'm Team Trace member number 209...

If any kind should out the can confirm that this is indeed a 200 watt RMS, 8ohm cab it would be wonderful. As you can see all of the specs have faded off the back plate. The measurements in case that helps are 18.5" W x 24" T x 17" D not including the rubber feet. I love this thing and I want another!

Kind soul...freaking autocorrect!

Welcome new member faviobarrio, #209

It's a 1153, the 1518 is same width as the height of the 1153, ie big bastard box.

I don't know about the power handling, it is tuned a little higher than the 1518 thanks to being smaller but the port lengths are the probably same 6".

Two of the 1153 is the rig I would like to have but they almost never come up for sale.

If I'm not mistaken there's an 1153 for sale pretty cheap in my area...thanks for the info, I might have to check that out.
