I agree with Ken.. there doesn't seem to be any real logic to it.

I can say however, that my Puma 212 combo is fantastic. For fun, I recently replaced the stock mid-high with a Faital 4" and the high end extension is beautiful. It's seamless with the 12" and has a nice paper cone grind to it. FYI, even though the 4" is full range, I'm guessing the highs drop off pretty dramatically after about 6-8K... so these combos would not well suited for slappers and super crisp tones. But they do have an inherently vintage and old school vibe because of the design, which I think must have been the design goal there.

I absolutely love mine, I have been pounding on it for two years with no issues. Other bassists play it at my gigs and always love the tone. It's a keeper! :bassist:

Thanks, yeah it's really amazing stuff. I had a couple things come in for review and I was sold. Loved the s212, but wanted a little more thump in the low end, so I sprung for a m212.

My rig, s212 and xs112. The xs112 is not nearly as loud as most 112s, it works really well for living room rehearsal and recording. When combined with the s212, the volume of the two cabs is amazing! Here's the odd thing, the two cabs sounds alot better with the xs112 on the side of the s212 (like in the photo) as opposed to sitting on top of the s212. When it's sitting on top the tone is nasally and not that bassy. When it's on the side, the bass is crisp, wall rattling and the mids really shine. Weird huh?

Wall proximity notwithstanding, I think its an issue of proximity to your ears. With the xs on top, you'll hear more of the crisp attack of tweeters/highs, whereas on the floor you hear more of the "meat" of the sound from the woofers. This creates the perception of more highs when stacked, and really it's the same sound, but your placement in relation to the xs cab is quite different.

Also, there could be more low end coupling with the floor when both cabs are on the ground.

Pure speculation mind you, but I've had similar experiences with my multi cab rigs

Yep acoustics is one of the hardest topic in my book.

When i used the 4x10 in combination with a 1x15, I preffered the 15 inch on top always, the 4x10 did sound hard and bright were as the 115 sounded full and deep.

The example in my previous post is mere a basic explanation of what could happen when placing the speakers on certain places.

I have had dramatic different experience when walking around the podium while playing, every step changed the sound perceived :-)
