TecAmp amplification club.....is there such a thing yet

I'll see what I can do when I get home tonight. I must say that I am totally impressed with this amp! All the features in this compact unit are totally usable. The bass cut the sub lows for boomy rooms, the lo-mid knob is the meat knob and supplies the gut-punching effect, the hi-mid cuts gankiness or adds brightness, and the highs can be cut much like a lo-pass filter or boosted for more sparkle up top. Truly impressive job there!

I also love the Taste control. A little to the left adds growly mids and a bit of dryness to the tone, great for those old 70's funk tunes, IMO/IME.

Of course the aux in and headphones has been a dream to practice through at home with disturbing the roommates. It has a mute switch, pre/post on the DI (that one sound man already described as beautifully crystal clear).

It's all useful and nothing is wasted. No fan noise, because there's no fan. And it's only 3 lbs!! This is MY amp, for sure. It was made for me. ;)

Have you pushed this amp hard yet, Scott? I was also very impressed with the Puma 900 at NAMM, and I have one on its way to me (Vic got sucked in, too :D). My only concern is whether or not there might be any thermal issues without a fan.

They sure do sound great, though, and the form factor and feature set are superb! :cool:

Glenn K says they do get quite hot, but so far, no shutdowns reported by his customers. I would not think this is an issue with the 500, but the 900 seems like you could possibly run into trouble. I guess the design is similar to the old SWR, using the chassis as a heat sink. So, even though it seems a bit scary that they get hot (I could almost fry eggs on my old SWR900 when pushed), I guess as long as the heat gets out of there, it is all good.

I might actually think that the 900 would fare better than the 500 without a fan, as the 900 wouldn't be working as hard to achieve the same volume output. We'll see...

That gets a bit circular. Yes, if you were using the 900 at a low level or using the 900 at 8ohms, you are probably right versus really pushing the 500. However, assuming you are driving the 900 at 4ohms and using most of its power (like into a fEarful stack or an Acme stack), that is a lot of heat (even class D) in a very little space.

Yeah, I was just thinking the scenario where you have the same cab, and the same output/volume needs, the 900 should be able to achieve this while running cooler than the 500.

I may be wrong, though...

+1 Makes sense. I would think the Puma900 would be AMAZING driving a 15/6 cab (from my experience with my Puma500 and various 15/6 builds). Plenty of power at 8ohms, and probably not really pushing the amp at that impedance. The voicing just makes those 15/6's (and Duke's Thunderchild112, where the Puma500 would be perfectly matched) SING.

I wouldn't say really hard. I used it for backline like I almost always use it with just a single 8ohm Berg HS210 in both a 5-piece and an 8-piece cover band. Plenty of volume, headroom, and amazing tone! Never noticed it get hot. Definitely cooler to the touch than my old Mesa M9 in the same situations, FWIW.

Fwiw, I never had any heat issues with the 900 at a 4 ohm load, with the volume pretty cranked for a 3 set'r.

Not saying its a non issue, but I didn't encounter any problems in my experience. And damn it sounded killer, both with the s212 and my Tri 112 stack.

Fantastic head. I was able to gig the prototype a few times, and also compare it to my original Puma500 and my beloved Markbass F500. The new voicing is kind of in-between those two wonderful heads. It sounded like a cleaner, fatter F500 to me, which is a very good thing. Very plug and play, and that low mid control is a thing of 'fat' beauty. Very 'meaty but pure' head, and it is even smaller than the F500. Max volume seems about the same as the F500, which is a good thing.

Enjoy. My F500 is 'close enough' that I'm sticking with that for my solid state micro needs. However, since the F500 is discontinued, the Puma500 will nicely cover that sort of 'small, loud, clean, accurate' sort of niche for those looking for that vibe.
