TecAmp S212/Puma500 Ultra Light Rig

Ok...decided to buy a Puma 1000 and give it a shot with the L410 thanks to Jukap and Kjung's review. You guys better have ears like mine! lol

Happy Birthday first of all. Nice present you bought for yourself. I am sure this recent puma craze is justified. Seems like a great amp from what I heard. I am really hoping to hear it soon. The way people are talking about it I am sure this thing sounds great. Good luck with it and have alot of fun.

Even I, Mr. 'anti-neo' have to confess serious interest based on the depth and comparisons quality of Ken's assessment.
+1 But I'd be interested how the Puma1000 stacks up against the upcoming Shuttle 12.0 Max. That just might be 2 guns blazing. Tube/solid state preamps and much improved tone controls in the 12.0 Max. I'm thinking the power might be comparable per side? Too bad the 12.0 Max won't bridge. The Puma compressor is supposed to be very good. I'm looking forward to checking out the Shuttle 12.0 when it comes out but don't know of anyone who carries Puma in the Houston area.

I saw that right after ordering my Dr. Bass cabinet...kind of wish Mark would have mentioned it to me as I really want one of those new 112 cabs he designed for "micro rigs". Looks pretty cool.
That would probably be a closer apples to apples comparison. I again find the Shuttle 6.0 to be quite a bit 'softer' and less full in the low end than the 600 watt rating would suggest, while the Puma feels and sounds like its true 500 watts. So, that being said, my guess is the Puma1000 would be a 'step above' the Shuttle 12 similar to how the Markbass stuff and Puma500 seems to be a step above the Shuttle 6.0 to me in volume, full tone, etc. IMO and IME there. The Puma 1000 is also the same form factor as the Puma500, while I believe the Shuttle 12 moves away from the micro amp form factor (no big deal there, but it does make the Puma1000 quite amazing to me.
The main thing is the totally, completely different voicing of the Puma heads versus the Shuttle, with the Puma heads being uber clean, wide, creamy, full and hi fi up top, and the Shuttle 6 being tight, punchy, upper mid aggressive, a touch attenuated down low, and a bit grindy in the mids. Very different, and it would be rare for a player to not have a strong preference for one versus the other IMO. The Markbass stuff kind of sits in the middle... louder and deeper than the Shuttle, but not as smooth and creamy and fat as the Puma.
I have not heard that combination. One thing, the 16 by 17 footprint is really designed for these micro heads. A full sized head would hang over the edges of the cab. No big deal, but it would look a little strange.
Since I prefer the AG500 (which is quite wide, deep and fat versus punchy to my ear) with cabs that are more tightly voiced (like the Berg HS210), my guess is it would sound pretty darn good. However, purely guessing there.
TecAmp makes a more full size, but still very lightweight 212 cab that is designed to go with there full sized heads. Originally, you couldn't get these cabs in the US, but as more and more retailers come on board (Austin Bass Traders, for example) it seems that you can order from the full cab line. That might be worth looking at.
I again really dig the crossover control that is somewhat similar in logic to the very nice Mesa circuit, which allows you to change both the level of the tweeter (including a full 'off' setting) and also the crossover frequency to result in a more 'hi fi' sizzle, or a grindy, growly, aggressive sort of upper mid snarl. Nice stuff!

That puma seems up my alley also. But I still can't understand the 1000 in bridge 8 ohm and can't in 4 ohm. I would love a Puma at 750 in 4 ohms. Perfect. But I bet that thing sounds perfect.
Yea that's kinda irritating. I don't like having to decided whether or not I'm going to get a second cab up front, but realistically i think 1000 watts into an 8 ohm 410 should never be too little for me
That would require each side to run at 2ohms, and at the moment, these micro's don't seem to like to do that.

I know. But like KJung said the micros don't like to do that. In the future it will Im sure. But a big 8 ohm at 1000 watts is alot of power. And if it sounds as sweet as all are saying this amp is a winner. Good luck with it. Let us know what you think when you hook up 1000 watts to the cab.

What a sweet rig! both cabs weights about 10 kilos, no problem taking the rig on the bus.
I also played through the Puma 1000 and the XS212, i was very impressed with the XS212 delivering such a fullrange and open sound, wonderful.
