TecAmp S212/Puma500 Ultra Light Rig

@ electricimprov
do you have any pictures from that gig, that show Richard playing this setup?
I love Bonas playing and his sound from the first time I heard him. I play a fodera too, and tried a lot of amps and Cabs to find my own sound. I tried Ampeg, Markbass, WW, Epis and Agis and finally found Tecamp. Funny enough they are built 40 Km from where I live.

Hey Don (electricimprov),
What night did you go to the concert? I was there Saturday... Skipped the BP Live concert and I am happy I did - awesome show!

That rig sounded killer!

Here are some crappy cell phone pics:

Ken,

How do you like the F1 with the Tec212? How does it compare to the Berg AE410?

Hey Dan,

I've been messing with exactly that comparison all day today. It's interesting, because the S212 has quite a bit of that aggressive upper mid thing going on, similar to the AE410. However, it's much tighter down low, and that's not particularly a good thing with the tightly voiced F1. It's almost like a Chris Squire sort of thing, grindy to the point of being too much for me.

So, while it's loud and punchy, I don't really dig it. While the AE410 is grindy and mid forward, it's also a pretty big box, and even though the low end is tight, there's a LOT of low end there. The S212 needs a little more 'low end pillow' coming from the amp. While I could dial in some pretty nice low end with the bass control of the F1 and the VPF filter, it just didn't seem like the optimal match to me.

Itnerestingly, I don't really dig the Puma500 with the AE410. It just doesn't punch like the F1.

I really like the Puma500/S212, and I really like (I mean REALLY like) the F1/AE410. The vice-versa combinations... not so much.

Thanks! That was a typo. I fixed it in my original post also.
:D

And... I'm off to Mexico for a week tomorrow. I'll be offline until next Sunday. Everyone have a good week and good gigs!
Ohhhh.... take me take me!!! ;) :D

Travel safe, bud, and have a great time. :)

Thanks for your thoughts.

I am a Berg fan, but the S212 is very appealing. Doesn't sound like it's a great fit with the F1 though. I guess the search for the perfect cab continues! :D

Per the above two posts, a Walter Woods with the GS112's would not be my idea of a good time. I've been there and done that for about a day, and it was a long day:D

I did a brief comparison of my DB112 x 2 stack with the S212 (using the Puma500 and my Sadowsky MV5), per a PM request from a fellow TBer. I though I'd post a picture and my brief impressions, since the S212 is actually lighter than a single DB112.

I was quite surprised. The S212 MORE than held its own, and actually seemed to have noticeably higher SPL (louder at the same setting than the DB112). The DB's did have a touch more low end extension (remember, the DB's use the same drivers as the GS112, and have that same big low end, with a touch more mid punch), but the S212 had more low mid punch, and also a much more present upper mid response (more modern and a bit more growly).

Volume-wise and ooomph wise, they were comparable, although I preferred the more modern top end of the S212. The DB112's have a very nice mid-mid punch, but there is a bit of a hole between the upper end of the driver and when the tweeter kicks in (not as bad as with the GS112, but it's still there). The S212 is totally seemless in the upper mid to treble transition, and with the very powerful tweeter control (volume and crossover frequency), there is a lot of tonal variety in the upper end of the S212.

All in all, I was somewhat surprised at this comparison, especially the SPL/volume results. The S212 really wumps.

It also reinforced my earlier description of the S212 being more like a really loud 210 cab than a more traditional sounding 212 voicing. It is tight, crisp, and punchy, and has a very, very 'quick' feel to it.

This cab, and the new Schroeder 115L+ are, IMO at the top of the heap for extreme lighweight single cab solutions (4ohms) when using small monoblock SS heads.

What do you think?... BTW Richard is using different cabs on the road I think he's adaptable in cab choice...he was using my two GS112 here in Prague

Funny, but it looks like the same face I used to make when I couldn't get my old rig to sound the way I wanted it to sound... :hmm:

:smug:

The 'I can't hear a ******* thing even though it's cranked' face.

Lived with those cabs for a year...:spit: Midrange hole a mile wide.

Lovely to practice through by yourself. Fabulous for solo bass.

Cheers,
Cameron

I used to make faces too and not of satisfaction. Those cabs were so slow that I thought I was going to develop CT trying to get something to happen. Sold fast. Anyway Richard seems to travel a lot and he seems to always be using different gear. He does get his tone. Cause he can. I've never seen him with the same amplification twice. For that reason alone I hope none of you patterns your own gear selection from his. Unless of course to see that it doesn't matter.:hmm::eek:

That being said, if you have a spare $4,000 laying about, two of these S212's stacked vertically with the Puma1000 might be the best ultra light rig money can buy if you like it clean, accurate, articulate and punchy.

Just try this : L410 ; I have it and ... wow ! You don't need ANYTHING else until you reach the "stadium audience level".

We did a GTG on Sunday, and the Puma500/S212 was kind of the 'hit of the party'.

It really sounds good... tight, quick, but plenty warm when pushed. I totally dig this stuff.

I'll again post that the Puma head with the 410UL(II) is about the best tone I've achieved so far with the 410UL. It's in the same tone universe as the Glock and Epi heads, but much more even and punchy.

The S212 not quite as loud as my 410's (it's 2/3rds the weight and size), but it has more inherent low end than the AE410, and more punch than the 410UL.
It's a very cool combination of deep low end that many associate with 12's
(it gives NOTHING up all the way down to the open B), and nice upper mid grind.
The switchable crossover is very cool, and there's just a ton of upper mid growl coming out of the top of those drivers. I dig it.
