TecAmp S212/Puma500 Ultra Light Rig

I did spend some more time with the TechAmp 2x10 last night, and so far, I am very impressed. This cab can hang with the best 2x10's I have heard, for sure.

Tom.

The really impressive thing about this 212 is that it is the same fooprint as the 210. It's just 5" or so taller. And, with the tight voicing, it's more of a 'super 210' than a traditional 212. Pretty cool.

Isn't that combined tweeter level/crossover shift control cool? I prefer the middle 'soft attack' level, which kind of mimics the EpiUL type tweeter set at around 10 o'clock. On the 'hard full' setting, the top of the cab somewhat mimics the AE410... more aggressive upper mids and lower treble grind. Pretty cool!

Just for the heck of it, here's a picture of the cab with that unique cover, first in 'schlepping mode', then in 'playing mode'. I can see what they are doing here. In the freelance 'hired gun' world of bass playing, it's all about getting in and out quick. With the rack bag and this cover, they are attempting to decrease set-up and breakdown time so that you literally can unzip a couple zippers, plug in and play. Many times, on very upscale casuals, you are required to put covers and cases in a separate room out of site of the muckity-muck guests. This would eliminate that issue.

Regardless of this feature, the cover is about as high end as you can get... really tough material.

Again, this surely isn't a key feature, but suggests the designers of these amps and cabs have 'walked the walk' of big city freelance playing.

Looks killer.
How would you compare this cab with the Bergs HT210S or the HT212?

Hey Allex,

I just finished doing an A/B with my HT210s and the 212S with my Sadowsky NYC MV5 with single coils. The picture gives you an idea of how small the S212 is.

The 212S has MUCH more mid presence than the wide, pure HT210s. It has much more lower mid punch, mid mid clarity/articulation and upper mid 'aggressiveness'. You could really hear the higher SPL combined with the 4ohm impedance of the S212 also.

Also (and let's see if I can get this into words that make sense), the HT210s has a very wide, deep sounding low end, but I notice a significant roll-off of that low end at the C on the B string and on down. The S212 seems to have a somewhat tighter low end that stays TOTALLY even all the way down to the open B. I have a feeling what I'm hearing is more upper bass coming from the S212, which of course, would not roll off much (i.e., that 1st harmonic B string thing). However, with the HT210s, when that deep bass rolls off, there is nothing much left in the upper bass/lower mids to punch that low end through. The top end of the HT210s almost defines 'hi fi' treble response to me, whereas the top end of the S212 is a little more rough and really translates the 'single coil J' upper mid/lower treble grit and grind beautifully.

Amazing that the S212 is about 15 pounds lighter than the HS210s (which again, is my favorite wide, pure, polite hi fi cabs when I'm looking for that vibe), and of course, adding the HT122s, creating the 's' stack, totally fills in the deep low end).

ALL the Tech Amp stuff is really good, some of the best there is; you should try THEIR monster cab - absolutely NUTS (and surprizingly, not that heavy).

Their little combos are absolutely superb, as well. I played a 12" and a 2x12" combo at NAMM 2006 and was very impressed. Kind of an EBS vibe to their gear, perhaps a little bit more clinical, but very very nice. I liked all of it better than the Glockenklang stuff I have tried.

BTW, I ordered an IP112ER and an HT112ER - should be here soon...

:hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper:

Still looking into preamps - I'm thinking Summit, but not the TD100 - perhaps a 2BA-221 pre, the FEQ50 and the Tube leveller; I might get two FEQ's, one for each bass. I'm also trying out the API channel strip with eq and comp.

And, just for the record, Summit does NOT have a bass preamp coming out - they just introduced the big channel strip, that's it for them for a while. Paul said they've been tinkering with the idea, but nothing solid yet for at LEAST a year.

So you really like the Kern IP777, eh, Mr. Bowlus? I wonder if Tech Amp makes a good pre? I'll have to check...

Not to hijack this thread.

Cheers,
Cameron

I just checked out the Puma 1000 amp. $2100 !! Wonder how these cabs sound with other heads, namely Gk?

The Puma 1000 sells for around $1,800 in the US. Not cheap, but less than the DB750, WW Ultra, and Glock HeartRock, for example (all with similar spec's and quality).

The Puma500 is about $1,200. Again, not cheap, but about what an Ag500, TF550b, Eden WT550 sell for.

That being said, the incredible price/value of the Markbass stuff really 'changed the game' on price perception.

Great time to be a bass player, as long as so many good choices, in a wide range of price points deosn't just confuse the cr*p outta ya;)

When I was coming up, we couldn't really get anything as good as the LMII, at any price point.

You know, this cab is great, and it's kind of a luxury purchase for me (I always love trying out the smallest, lightest, loudest new thing). With the LMII, and for the playing context and volume you are describing above, I just LOVE the relatively new Bergantino AE410. It's about 60 pounds, is 4ohm (which is key with the LMII), has a nice spray on coating (although it really does require the cover to keep it looking nice), and is one of the smaller 410's out there (only 16" deep). It's very tight and punchy, and has plenty of growl and sparkle up top, and it matches beautifully with the LMII. It's actually less money than the S212 (which again is amazing if 'the smallest and lightest' is very key, and you aren't on a budget).

If you get a chance to try the AE410, it really is killer, and has that low mid punch that really works with articulate fingerstyle playing. And, the aggressiv upper mids that can be a bit much when slapping are beautifully tamed by the upper mid control on the LMII, which is perfectly voiced to remove the bit of gank around 1K.

That being said, if you have a spare $4,000 laying about, two of these S212 stacked vertically with the Puma1000 might be the best ultra light rig money can buy if you like it clean, accurate, articulate and punchy.

AE410 at 4ohms - or will 8 be a better choice so I can add a second one? There is a Bergantino Dealer near me so I could be peresuaded to go trade in my old school cabs and snag one of these - I will have to go try it first of course. Thanks!

The only come in 4ohm version. They are LOUD! You will know within a couple of notes if you dig it. The voicing is unique (that tight low end and upper mid presence). I love it in a mix... tight, punchy, loud, and it automatically slots the bass guitar where it should be in the mix... a touch above the bass drum and below everything else, but with an aggressive enough upper mid and treble response so that your upper end (especially when slapping or really digging in with round wounds) doesn't disappear into the ride cymbal.

Thanks for taking the time!
Sounds like a killer cab. It seems that it's voicing would compare with Schroeder's, heavy on the mids. Do you feel that it could be the case?

It's MUCH more even than the 1210 and 1212 (which really favor the low mids), but I would say that it's in the same ballpark as the 115L+, which is becoming one of my favorite cabs.

However, I would compare it more to the AE410 (especially if you set the S212's crossover and tweeter to the 'hard full' setting), in that it's very even from the upper bass to the lower treble... punchy but not peaky, if that makes sense.

It seems that this is one the few NEO cabs that I might consider purchasing. Look forwarding to trying it. Even sound is definitely my thing, as I don't enjoy either over pronounced or scooped mids.

Well I stopped by Kens house tonight to help him hand out candy to the millions of kids in the neighborhood, and hear my Sadowsky with the new single coils. Anyway the Tec head is cool, the whole rig weighs less then one of kens Tera lab cables:D. Well thats a bit of an exaggeration. but it is amazingly light. Anyway, the cab is a bit to clean for my taste, I prefer a bit more of the grind and growl of a Berg AE or my LDS 210. I desperately want to hear that head with other cabs.
