TecAmp S212/Puma500 Ultra Light Rig

Nice written Ken.
I just got my new TecAmp endorsementrig, a Puma 112 Combo and the XS 115.
What a sweet rig! both cabs weights about 10 kilos, no problem taking the rig on the bus.
I also played through the Puma 1000 and the XS212, i was very impressed with the XS212 delivering such a fullrange and open sound, wonderful.

Very nice!!!!

Nice! Beautiful bass also. I really like the way the S cabs and XS cabs are all the same footprint within each line so they stack nicely. Very nicely designed stuff, and beautifully voiced IMO!

I guess the XS stuff is even smaller and more lightweight than the S line, which is smaller and more lightweight than the L line. Is that correct? It's a little confusing... they have a LOT of cab lines!

So Ken, if you had to choose between the S212 and the Schroeder 115+L as a stand alone cab?

Very different, and I love them both. I guess if someone put a gun to my head and said I could only keep one, it would be the S212, since that's a very light, but full size cab, so plenty of deep low end and high volume level, even in the deep lows.

But, that 115L+ is SO cool for what it is... a tiny, tiny, uber lightweight box that sounds punchy and loud.

If the question would have been... one s212 or two 115L+'s, that would be a much more difficult decision.

Yeah, there really seems to be some magic in the 2 small cab thing doesn't there? I have to admit though, the thought of a competent 212 with a small footprint that weighs the same or less than one of my Berg 112 cabs is very appealing, and it sounds like my Aggie might be a good match. Verrrrrrrrrrrrry tempting... :help:

Ken,

the XS line only carries one speaker cabinets (1x10", 1x12" and 1x15").

To sum up a line made for small place and modular rig practicality.

The S line has some two speakers cabinets

And you have to upgrade to the L line to have some big 4x10" and 4x12".
;)

Nevertheless, I don't realy understand the need for the M line...

Regards

That makes sense... the XS is just the smallest, single speaker lightweight boxes, and the S is the dual driver light box line. The L is still lightweight, but larger multi-driver boxes. I too am not sure where the 'M' like fits it.

Great stuff though. I continue to be very impressed with the s212, and continue to feel that two 4ohm s212's and a Puma1000 might be among the best rigs out there period, and probably the most powerful lightweight rig out there.

After seeing "In Good Company" I stopped using the term SYNERGY especially in my work environment.

No point I just got a laugh out of it. To many movies while on a plane I guess.
No, you're right, it's a horribly yuppie word. I once got stuck on an elevator with these managers for a restaurant that shall remain nameless but rhymes with "Frydays," and one guy was saying to the other that the way to move ahead there was to create synergies, then talks about how he's created several synergies and how well it's working for him and just kept using the word "synergy" over and over without ever putting any meaning to it. By the tiime he got to his floor, I was ready to push him over the railing. "Hey pal, how about your skull creating a synergy with the floor 8 stories below you???"

I'm a BIG fan of the DB112x2/TF550b rig. VERY nice, although quite cumbersome to haul around IMO. I have a feeling you would dig the S212 a lot... lighter than a single DB112, and louder and punchier than 2 x DB112 with just as much low end to my ear..

I know I may well be branded an idiot and flammed for being an anti-NEO ludite BUT I've yet to be convinced by the NEO tone! Plenty of people have said that it isn't the driver that gives any of these neo equipped cabs any mid-bias it is the cab design etc but every neo equipped cab I've heard/tried (and I've personally owned 5) has been too mid biased. This may be down to a trad driver compressing or have something to do mild distortion due to the the v-max being close to limit or whatever but I can't seem to get the same warmth/punch out of a neo than I can a traditional driver. I accept that the neo cabs tone will be nirvana for some people but I want that bit of 'colouration' that the DB's give me! :hiding:

I'm not saying the Tecamp cab is the same as the others I've had/tried but I went back to the DB112's and there was the tone I was after... Sorry guys I'm going to trade off the weight for the tone 'I' desire; at least for now. :)

As many others have said, I don't think it's the neo thing per se, but I do agree that quite a few neo designs like the Genz 'x' cabs, the older Epi UL's, the Schroeder L's the TecAmp Neo's, and the Bergantino Neo's all have a strong midrange character and an upper mid bump to my ear. Luckily, that's the tone I love, so it works for me.

Interestingly, the DB112's are the only non neo cabs I own at this point, since they also to my ear have a strong mid presence. However, that mid presence seems to be more in the mid mid area than the upper mids, and it results in more 'punch' than the 'grind' of the neo cabs I own. As much as I dislike the GS112's, I really do love the DB112's!, especially with the Thunderfunk. That rig gets LOT's of love at our GTG's, especially when the Jazz Basses come out!

That being said, the Puma head's fat and even voicing seems to work very well at flattening out the mid aggressive voicing of the S212. It is still a more modern tone than the DB112/TF, but I dig it a lot.
