TecAmp S212/Puma500 Ultra Light Rig

Hey Ken thanks for the update.

Did you pick up a second Puma? I'm guessing these are your small rigs and your using the Markbass stuff with a Epi or Berg 4x10 still for bigger stuff?

Thanks for sharing...

The second Puma500 arrives next week. My St. Louis rig (where I gig mostly) is the s212/Puma500 with my Alleva LM. WONDERFUL!!!!

I like it so much, that I am also moving to TecAmp as my 'home rig' in Detroit (with the Sadowsky NYC ash/maple orange bomber!). So, I will have a second Puma500 here, along with the slightly larger 4ohm M-212 (since I often play larger, louder gigs in the 'driving' area that I gig around Detroit). The price of the M-212 is about the same as the S212, and that slight extension of the low end while still keeping a small form factor (21x17/x16... so only a few inches wider than the s212) seems like it might be a good thing.. we shall see!

Probably too much information:D, but I haven't been this jazzed about a line of gear since the Markbass heads came out a couple of years ago (still wonderful, and the F1 and LMII are staying 'on the team' as back-ups).

Hey Chumley. What happenend to all the 15+L love?

TOTALLY still digging it. That's also not going anywhere and will continue to be my small gig cab (with the F1 driving it). I just had a buddy over today with a very nice Roscoe. He played through it (powered by the wonderful MB F1), picked it up, then just started laughing. I'll keep one of my 410UL's and the AE410 also.... I'm thinning the herd, but I'm not stupid:D

That being said, at this point, I expect the TecAmp stuff to see duty on 90% of my gigs.

Sorry for the gushing. To be clear, I don't think this stuff is 'better' than the other great stuff out there, it just is literally 'the sound in my head' with my single coil J basses. I'm surely not saying it's 'the best' or 'for everyone', and I still totally dig a lot of other stuff. But man, for my tone (which I put up on some clips earlier in this thread) this stuff is just perfect with very little knob twiddling!

Since I'm slowly moving to the TecAmp stuff all the way, and I've thinned the herd quite a bit in the last month, I have the M-212 (4ohm) on order (the 'medium sized' 212... same speakers as the S212 I have now, but just a few inches wider but still around 44 pounds, resulting in a touch more deep low end).

It should be here in a month! I'll put up a review and comparison to my s212 when it arrives. I will then have two complete TecAmp rigs, one at home, and one in my 'on the road' location. Cool:bassist:

Hey ken... I'm in the middle of deciding on a new tecamp rig with Glenn at Austin Bass Traders. Talk about thinning the herd... I'm selling pretty much every cab I own to try the 'light and loud' route for a change.

I'm really sick and tired of dragging around 70-100 lbs of gear where ever I go. Pack up, go down the stairs, into the truck, out of the truck, up the stairs, down the hall, up the stairs, on the stage, back down the hall, down the stairs, into the truck, out of the truck, up the stairs and set up again...

My IP112 sounds great, but with my TD-1 it weighs in at around 70lbs! Also, this cab is just TOO small in it's own to do what I need it to, and taking both cabs can be a pain. Besides, I only play small casual gigs these days, so it's time for a big change.

Anyhow, I'm thinking about a Puma 500 with an xs115 (4ohm) and hope that it'll make a nice stand alone rig that will suit my needs. (I usually only playing with a couple guitarists using single 12's, 15's with a med/loud drummer). If I find I need more headroom or that something is missing in the response, I'm going to try the s212 or m212. (look forward to hearing your review on that!)

I can't wait to hear this stuff... and more importantly, enjoy lugging it around.

That xs115 looks cool. I'll tell you though, the s212 is killer, and has a similar small footprint. It's so light and small, but still very loud... not quite 410 loud, but close enough. The Puma500 with a 4ohm s212 is quite loud, and very even sounding. I think you will dig it, and Glenn is a great guy to work with.

That IP112 is cool, but it just feels a lot heavier than it is. I am totally impressed with the big IP310, but that little 112 box really didn't seem to take advantage of all that power and DSP, etc., etc. to my ear. Nice though, but you are right, once you add the second 112 and a full size preamp, it's not really a small, light rig any more.

Let us know if you take the plunge!

Will do!! It's not a matter of 'if'... but 'when' ;)

Also, while I was originally quite enamored with the sound of the IP, I think your're right, the small cabs don't seem to take advantage of the DSP as much as you'd think. I can make this thing huff n' chuff like crazy! - the tone stays tight and controlled when the DSP starts to clamp down and pump out that low end, but it sounds like a wind tunnel :hmm: At least when used stand alone... without the extension that is.

Pat.

EDIT: I should probably mention that this is with eq boosted right at the 'no-go' area (around 40hz - wide Q) AND at full volume.

Heads up...

After much debate... one Tecamp S212 Combo is headed to my place in Vancouver BC!! Delivery to be expected in three weeks. :hyper:

Check out the Link Removed on this thing... 47.5 lbs, low roll-off at 32hz! I hope that's not a Typo!;):D

Pat.

I think that 32 might be a typo (versus the s212 stand-alone specs), but that's not a bad thing IMO. This is the combo version of the rig that I play (I think the -3db spec is 40hz, which is plenty of true, deep low end IMO). It's plenty deep and plenty loud. You should really dig it. Having a small cab extend too deeply down low can play heck with SPL and punch/projection on the gig IMO and painfully IME!

Yeah... the s212 is 40z which is why I figured the spec could have been 'lost in translation' Funny thing is, all the combos on their site are spec'd lower than their respective cabs!? It didn't have any relevance on my decision to go with the combo, but it could in fact be the case.

Ken... is your cab front ported? >> EDIT: I Can see from your pics that they are. One in each corner on the tweeter side (with that curved edge next to the driver... nice detail) Anyhow, the 212 combo is definitely either rear ported or sealed (spoke to Glenn about it and he's pretty sure it's rear ported) which suggests to me that there's a specific design goal at work to extend the low end. Again... purely speculation and has no bearing on my descision to go with the combo, but interesting nonetheless. We'll have to see what the deal is when it gets here.

Here is what their website says about the combo; it's somewhat confusing:

"The Puma combo 212 is fitted with newly designed TecAmp 12” bass speaker chassis that work in meticulously calibrated enclosures to deliver expanded low end. The combos feature the new NTM-1 middle-high cone speaker with a Neodymium double magnet system. Working in a sealed enclosure it impresses with a low roll-off frequency and a very flat frequency response, thus delivering a smooth top end far beyond 10 kHz at astounding sound pressure levels."

Sounds like a 'sealed enclosure' to me.

Pat.

Well, I was gonna 'break' the story in a couple of weeks anyway, but TecAmp has redesigned the S line of cabs. The new enclosures will be rear ported, and have slightly more volume (though similar weight, I believe). According to Thomas, the results are notably enhanced low frequency performance, with little or no effect on the mids/highs.

Sounds like a winner, to me!

Tom.

Hi,

I'm new on talkbass (French guy) and I can see that there is also a Tecamp fan there !

I use for my side two amps depending what I want and my feeling ...

mainly at rehearsal or very small gigs : Puma 500 + XS112 (8 ohms)
Need more headroom ? -> Puma 500 + S212 (4ohms)

At home : my Sadowsky SA200 on the S212 ... or for Rock gigs ...

I own the S212 for about 3 years now / the XS112 and the Puma for 1 year (when they was just released by Thomas !)

I don't need other amp & cab stuff now ...
Glad to hear that over the atlantic, guys like you try those amazing products !

Nice!!

+1 Very cool. The cabs are amazing already! A little more low end is always a good thing!

I was thinking that combo 212 might be a slightly different cab, since it looks deeper, and I assumed they made it a little bigger to have room for the head. However, the dimensions posted are the same as the stand-alone s-212. So, maybe that's the typo (or maybe it's just tuned lower with the different porting.

Very cool. I have an email into Glen to see if this change will transfer over to the stand-alone 's' line. If so, I might change my M-212 order to one of the new s-212's, since I ordered the slighly larger M cab for the express reason of using it in situations where I need a little more low end oomph.

Some sweet stuff for choices there.
I bet you're one of the VERY few across the pond to have an SA200 amp.

I haven't heard them, myself (though we are supposed to get the new S210 and S212 as soon as they are available), but from what Thomas says, the newer S212 might be just what you are after.

Thanks very much for this tip. You are on top of it!

I'll post back if I hear anything from Glenn. If I can get M-212 performance in a box just slightly bigger than my current s-212 (which is killer in its original version), I would be a very happy man!!!

Thanks again for posting this info:bassist:

Very cool indeed!

I've got much more confidence in the product specs posted on tecamp's website after all of this. Hopefully these 'new' rear ported cabs will be ready to ship. :) Glenn has been GREAT to deal with!

I can't wait to see, hear and feel this combo! Call it a hunch... but I think I'm going to be blown away by this stuff. :bassist:

Tom. Thanks again. After talking with Glenn, who had just talked with the TecAmp guys, I changed my order from the M-212 to the 4ohm s-212 (II). Cool!!!!!!
