TecAmp S212/Puma500 Ultra Light Rig

Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: I have a 'love/hate' relationship with that rack bag. The 'love'... VERY high quality and lot's of protection, and nice venting design. The 'hate', no pocket for cables (which I prefer to keep with the head). However, I liked the basic idea of a 'micro rack bag' (for other readers, the head actually attaches to the bag using the rack screws), that I purchased one of the new iGig bags for my bass, which has enough pockets and room for two speakon cables, a nice 10' AC cord and a nice small power strip plus all my other stuff.

FYI... I found Invalid Link Removed website with lots of 'real life' pics of their Tecamp stock. I found it helped me make my decision when it came time to buy, so I thought it might be useful to share in this thread. :)

Nice!! I've been looking for pics like those! I can't believe it comes with rear casters! I've been looking for this exact form factor for some time now: 212 combo cab in vertical position with rear casters, and apparently it sounds dang awesome, too! Looks like there may be some Markbass/Berg gear hitting the classifieds here soon... :smug:

You can sure see that the newly redesigned s212 is rear ported:eek: No question about that now!

One thing I find interesting is that the combo version of the Puma500 has an external speaker jack, even though the spec's list the combo cab as 4ohms and the head as '4ohm minimum safe'. I wonder what that is about? It looks like the label on the output jack says 'minimum 8 ohms'. That would suggest that the combo cab is actually 8ohms, not 4. Hmmm.

Finally, it looks like the updated cab design replaces the horn type tweeter with a small paper cone driver in a separate sealed enclosure, if I'm reading the description correctly on the website. That's an interesting change also. I look forward to hearing the new s212. Mine should arrive in early April!


Edit: Regarding the impedance, it looks like the internal combo cabs are all 8ohms. The specs list '2 x 12” TecAmp LE10-65 4 ohms'. I assume that means two 4ohm 12's in series, resulting in 8ohms, which then allows you to run a second 8ohm cab. I guess that's good and bad news. For the small single speaker cabs, 8ohms makes sense. For the larger 212, I guess I prefer having the full 500 watts pumping into that larger cab. However, it's probably not a night and day difference (the Puma500 sounds VERY good at 8ohms).

Let me say, IMHO, the best of two world (solid state & light VS full tube & heavy)...

I use the little cab XS112 (8omhs) so running 250 W max
with the Puma for small gigs / rehearsal / or little gigs with friends...
Puma + S212 (4 ohms) for bigger rigs...

and with again bigger events (the Puma + S212 for me and the DI of the Puma through the PA ...it's enough)

And I mainly use the sado @ home :ninja: or when I want
a different sound sometimes...

but the Puma is my main amp for gigs very easy to transport.

And what a sound !!!

That's a great combination of gear. I too just love this stuff!

I'm not much for tube amps, but that Sadowsky is really a beautiful piece of gear, especially if you don't have to haul it around! You are lucky to own that.

If I had a serious home studio, I would have that SA200 sitting in it with a Berg HS210!

I haven't heard the currently shipping redesigned s212, so not sure there. When mine arrives in a few weeks, I'll grab my buddy Mikebass's 6.0 and give it a spin. With the original s212, my guess is it would not be that great of a match-up. The tight low end and very present upper mids of that cab is perfect IMO for the fat, warm, full, even tone of the Puma500. The tight low end of the 6.0 and the very present upper mids that I hear in that head would probably be 'too much of a good thing' (similar to my feelings with the F1 match-up with that cab). However, the new model is supposed to be a bit more relaxed, with a bigger low end, so it might work pretty well.

I like it fine with either of those cabs. However, I like the LMII just as much with those two cabs. IMO, the Puma heads and cabs are REALLY designed to go together IME. The head is similar to the LMII in that it sounds pretty darn good with literally every cab I've tried it with. However, it's something beyond special with at least the TecAmp cab I own.

That being said, as I've posted before, the Puma heads REALLY sound good with the EpiUL's. They keep that signature Epi 'wide and pure' while at the same time punching up the low mids for more 'chest thump'. Nice match-up IME.

I love my AE410 and the little Schro is a good fit for rehearsal and small gigs. I am interested in a alternative rig that would contain two twelve's, preferably with vertical array capabilities. I'm looking at the Tech S212 or an AE112 stack. I think either would be nice and in between the massive sounding AE410 and small but mighty 4ohm 115L+.

+1 That AE112 x 2 with the LMII is just killer to my ear. The TecAmp Puma500 and s212 is even more amazing IMO and IME, but will cost you $2,500:eek::D
