Tech 21 all tube preamp???

That pre is huge in comparison to some Class D heads. Passive cut only EQ is also of no interest. The price is in the range of some of the full tube heads. All in all no thank you.

+1 I could buy four vintage V4 heads or one amazing vintage SVT for less than that price. It's a four-tube pre-amp. Sure, it sounds great. But it doesn't change the world as far as tone goes. It's just a tube pre doing what a tube pre does. Not one thing new here at all.

I would say that in the case of this particular pre-amp, it's not ment for the average consumer.

I would agree but if that IS the case why bother??

MarkBass came into the bass world with a comparatively new and tiny product. They became a raging success because the units were priced reasonably and thus could appeal to a huge market. They sold thousands of the things despite their outlandish livery. How many units do Tech21 hope to sell?? At that price I don't think they'll sell too many.

While I agree with the majority sentiment in this thread, in all fairness no one has heard one yet. I imagine not many people ever will.

I heard the demo that was posted on the site. It sounds good. Would I spend the money if I had it, NO. You can get an ampeg svt for that money and for a few more bucks and a discount a heritage or VR.

I emailed them about the price a few months ago. Prepare yourself.......$2500.

I have a pretty good idea of the cost and labor required to build something like this, and I can say that is absolutely outrageous. I would at least expect higher quality components.

Tech 21 could screw up a wet dream.
Once again they have no idea what would actually be useful, or usable.
Who wants a tube preamp the size of a tube amp at nearly the same price?
So many of their products are like 90% of the way to great but fall short on that last detail.
:scowl:

+1! I was really curious about this myself. $2500!!! And no power amp??!?! That's insane compared to what you can get in a different tube amp that is an all in one shot AND if I shop used could find a pretty decent one for 2/3 the price. Wow..... And not a good wow.

I would be interested to hear their thought process behind this product, who they're trying to target, and why they priced it the way they did.

Hmmm...

I think that if I were looking for a product like that, I'd prefer a Bamboo-enclosed Monique:

I have the Dove Cage Monique. It is a pain in the @$$ as it needs a separate poweramp, but IMO worth it. I also have a rack version of Monique. Much cheaper than the Tech 21 Pre and amazing tone.

Tech 21 does make one great stuff. I swear by their Bass Boost Chorus and Programmable BDDI. The do come up with some wacky crap from time to time though.

I spoke with Dale at Tech 21 about these at length, and they are going to be very limited edition...Andrew is only making TWELVE of them...the limited edition run and boutique pricing is designed to make them very exclusive, essentially an ego piece in a tube-only gear head's studio ;)

They used carbon film (not comp), but the overall compents are pretty generic and certainly don't reflect the price. Agree metal film is the way to go.
