Tech 21 bass fly rig

Great question! Other than the fact that I like the accuracy and speed of the pitch black more than the fly rigs one, I also play in a metal band with my five string bass tuned down to A#. Haven't found another tuner able to register that low of a note and I don't like tuning off of the 12th fret

I hear ya. I still keep my TU-3 around if I ever need it. I don't have a bass tuned lower than standard C tuning and the Fly Rig tuner has worked well.

Whew! I've read the entire thread.

Now for my thoughts.

The Fly Rig is very good. A replacement for a full pedal board...No. But I bought one when the preamp I use on my board had to go off for repair. I needed something as I had gigs lined up and didn't have time to wait for a fix or to have something shipped to me. I ran down to Guitar Center and picked up a Fly Rig.

I used it on a gig today and it was fine. The tuner isn't as accurate as the one on my board..but it's functional and I wasn't out of tune. The compressor isn't in the league of my MXR Bass Comp, but I used it sparingly to round out the bottom end and it was fine. I don't really use fuzz, chorus, or other effects much. The octaver works fine for me, but I don't use one much. I was playing a passive bass, and levels were fine. No issues whatsoever.

The unit fits perfectly in the front pocket of my Mono bag and my initial thought was to sell it when I get my preamp back...but honestly, it's so good I may keep it for a backup. I've been on gigs where I've had a patch cable get scratchy or something in my signal chain act funny. It's very comforting to know I have the Fly Rig in my bag that could get me though a gig if needed. I carry a back up bass, why not a tiny backup pedal board? That's pretty sweet! I seldom ever use an amp/cab, so the Fly Rig is perfect for much of what I do.

There are absolutely times when my big pedal board is not required and the Fly Rig would give me all I needed. I think it's a keeper.

I had this for a while, loved it, all I needed....Sold, started up a small nano pedalboard which has changed quite a bit. All of a sudden I really started missing this thing again. So simple. Found a good b-stock deal on Prymaxe for $235 and pulled the trigger. Now to sell of my Nano pedalboard to put that money back in the bank!

Been thinking about these since I first heard about them, and am finally buying a used one on Saturday. I'm not really expecting it to replace my pedalboard for gigs. But I've got a band that rehearses in a couple of different spots and I'm sick of hauling amps and pedalboard around to them. Something I can stick in the pocket of a gig bag and DI to the PA while having Sansamp features and a tuner and all built in is really looking attractive.

Got it on Saturday. Sounded great at home. Just got back from using it in band practice - and it's great. Did everything I needed it to. I had said it wouldn't be replaced my gigging pedalboard, but now that I think about it, for that project... I'll hold off before listing everything for sale, but I'm thinking about it.

Simplicity is very very enticing. It's not the best at anything, but it works at just about everything one really needs. A DI+.

I'm in the same boat. I'm tired of lugging my full board around, and for the various ampless gigs I play, seems like this could be great to FOH/monitors. I've only rehearsed with it so far (got it a few days ago), but I think it's possible I'll dump the full board, as the Fly Rig seems to meet my fairly limited needs (tuner/preamp/mild comp/mild chorus/mild overdrive).

I bit the bullet and got one a couple of weeks ago Sweetwater had an open box one a few $$ off and it's mine now. Was just tired of dragging a big pedalboard around and not even using half of it anymore.

Couple of thoughts that go along with what's been said already:

The compressor is ok for what's basically a one knob setup. It's either more or less no way to change attack, release or ratio. I mostly use one to catch peaks when I'm popping so it's serviceable. The boost is nice if I need it. Nice to see it's the VT bass and not the regular Sansamp deal. Might use it for a little dirt or added tone but it works well. Chorus is nice nothing crazy but it sounds like a chorus lol

I can get a serviceable envelope filter sound. The range control is really touchy though. I get an ok synth sound which I use on a few things but the octave isn't really usable. Love that it has a tuner and DI on board and they work fine.

Played it on a couple of gigs and rehearsals and so far so good. Have to be a bit precise stepping on the buttons due to the size but I'm happy so far!

Sweet lil' board! Do you, by chance, have a Volto underneath the nano+?

sorry if this has already been asked. how effective is the boost section for working as a legit overdrive?

It works. Sounds kind of weak in isolation where I tend to max it out, but it seems to pop more when used in a mix and I found myself having to dial it back some.

That’s kind of my impression of the FlyRig in general.... stuff that sounds kind of marginal at home sounds pretty good when used with an actual band.
