Tech 21 bass fly rig

Great comprehensive and useful review!

My takeaways: All the controls seem to be nicely continuous and usable. The fuzz and octave (sub)sections seem a bit disappointing.

Thank you!

Yeah, i agree. I also recorded my thoughts/opinions in a separate video which is coming soon.

If they do a V2 of this pedal I’d love it if they’d ditch the digital side and put a real fuzz and analogue chorus in it.

The Octafilter can be cool, and I appreciate that they tried to give that section four or five different effects, but I find it so situational that I’d rather have one or two dedicated effects with higher quality.

agreed. I’d love a V2 with an effects loop & some dedicated analog effects.

I wish they would add an Aux in. :) It would be great to have the ability to use it with another device( iPhone, etc) to practice? Especially with it being so portable. @tech21nyc

Me too! I have the Ampeg SCRDI and love that feature about it to jam with my favorite songs or the church songs I am practicing for the weekend. Though, I just ordered one and hope I don't (or do I??) hear at Winter NAAM a V2 version coming out.

I know what you mean! I'm sort of holding out for what I feel will check all of my practice and performance boxes...in one box! ;)
Good luck!
Brent

We took the same route, I also bought an Ampeg SCR-DI instead of BFR because of the aux-in.
I send an email request to Tech21 asking to build a small (really means tiny) battery operated mixer with one input for BFR (or other Fly Rigs) and one input for an aux-in, nothing fancy, maybe even a passive one as we can control the aux-in volume directly on the device and the Fly Rigs already have headphone out.

Now that I have a few more months with this...

I’d like it if I could send a pre-SansAmp signal out to the stage amp and a post-SansAmp signal out the DI... similar to what I can achieve using the parallel out on the VTDI, but with the benefit of the added effects of the FlyRig. I’d also like a blend control for the DI and the ability to use speaker emulation only only the DI.

Long story short, if they took a fully featured VTDI and added a tuner, boost, fuzz and chorus I’d be set.

As it is I’m rarely using my FlyRig because the VTDI gives me better control and routing options, plus it’ll run on a battery.

If the FlyRig ditched the digital effects I suspect it’d also run well on a battery/phantom power.

I may have posted on this before... I’ve run my fly rig off a 9v using a battery clip. Iirc draws around 100ma so figure 5hrs battery life. More if using rechargeables.
Side note - I’ve ruined enough devices from leaving a battery in them and having the battery leak... even pedals that have a battery compartment I use a clip and keep the battery on the outside. Daisy chain will power a small board from one 9v especially with a high capacity rechargeable

V2 - not many of us play tech 21 for their octave, fuzz or chorus (although i really like their choruses).

We play tech21 for their awesome analog amp-in-a-pedal.

Ditch the effects.

COMP --> VT --> Blonde --> Bass Driver

Obviously without all the bells/whistles/EQ of those specific pedals - but, basically a greatest hits of Tech21 amps/dirt.

I also agree that they need a V2 - my pet peeve is not enough headroom. I don't have that problem with the DUG or the SansAmps. NONE of my other pedals from other companies have the issue either (EH, Dark Glass, etc). It is actually so bad I don't need the SansAmp for distortion :-) I have actually talked to them about it and all they do is argue - despite the overwhelming evidence. Not listening to customers will doom even the best company.

I actually like the chorus. I got their bass driver chorus to try and emulate it - not a lot of luck.

One simple thing they could do. Move the output jack away from the 9 volt in! Using a right angle patch cord is an issue!

Just to be positive. I love this company. I want to see it prosper. That is why I take the time to get involved in discussions like this. T21 - PLEASE LISTEN!

I don’t think they need to reinvent the wheel, I find it pretty much feature-complete for most applications.
There are only a few minor tweaks I would make, but I reckon they would make a big impact.

Keep the chorus, it sounds pretty good and it’s useful to have the option.

The Octafilter section tries to do too many things at once and doesn’t quite pull it off - the filter isn’t great and the octave isn’t much use. I’d ditch those two and keep the fuzz, maybe add more control over it.

I’ve never found a use for the boost. Maybe that could be replaced with a switch a la the dUg DP-3X, to add more gain to the SansAmp for a growly overdrive.

The main thing I’d want though is an FX loop like the guitar Fly Rig v2 - which could also be a way to put the SansAmp out to an amp on stage, minus the cab sim.

Also at higher gain settings there’s quite a bit of hiss, could do with seeing the back of that too.

The Fly Rig is already surprisingly versatile and is pretty much a self-contained rig in a ludicrously small size; a few minor amendments and it could be a class-leader.

I like the VT Bass circuit in the fly rig but a blend option would have been great like the DI version. If there were to be a V2, I would like to see some kind of option to use either the VT Bass Preamp or classic BDDI. Say if the button is not engaged, VT Bass. Engage the button and it becomes the BDDI.

I enjoyed the simplicity of the chorus in the Fly Rig and wouldn't mind seeing that return with maybe an additional tonal option or two.

I didn't like the compressor, felt it got a little noisy. There is always some kind of compression going on anyway within the Sansamp circuit so adding a little more too it felt like overkill.

The Octafilter section tries to do too many things at once and doesn’t quite pull it off - the filter isn’t great and the octave isn’t much use. I’d ditch those two and keep the fuzz, maybe add more control over it.

I agree that they tried to fit in too much. I did enjoy the envelope filter however. Took a bit of tweaking but I was able to find a tone that worked any time I felt like some funk.

Well, I picked one of these units up a month ago here on the classifieds. Since there are still no gigs in the future, I decided to do YouTube covers to keep my chops up. This unit along with my new PreSonus Studio 2|4 fits the bill perfectly. The BFR records beautifully and the compression is subtle and effective.

While getting to know the BFR, I was able to pull out all useable tones from the effects side, although I might use them with my church band, my tribute band still gets my pedal board.

All in all the BFR suits my needs as a recording and practice tool, as well as a grab and go Swiss Army knife for church gigs, and jam sessions.

Its a great unit I reckon. On my big pedalboard I have a really good compressor pedal, and I like the BFR compressor, sounds best to me on lowest settings. I have a VTBass DI, and I like the BFR SansAmp about as much. Got a great envelope filter, and I like the BFR filter, and have a great chorus pedal but love the BFR chorus. The DI is really good too, it’s in my top picks Of DI boxes for me to use for home recording. The octave is about the only thing I don’t get along with.

I agree about the Sansamp, compressor, DI, and chorus. The boost function is cool as well, set to post and kick it on for a songs chorus, or have it set to pre and drive the Sansamp circuit harder.

I don’t have a fuzz, filter, or octave on my big board, I have no need for them at the moment. Here is a pic of my gigging board.
