Tech 21 Leeds bass demo

So I got to try the Leeds last night with my full band mix (2 guitars). Here's my review:

(cue Keanu Reeves face)
whoa.


This thing SLAYED. Cut through the band like a knife. This has made several other pedals of mine expendable :eek:

Whilst watching, I couldn't help thinking that it was very much for guitarists, and then the Pink Floyd section came in on bass, and I though ''Hmm, a little gritty, but nothing too special'' ... then came the Entwhistle piece at the end and I actually screamed at the screen ''Oh my god I need one of those''. Not a word of a lie :p

I'm interested in this pedal too and was disappointed (too) by the Money clip in the you tube video but I'm still wondering if it is good for a Roger Waters tone, especially the Live at Pompei.

Has anyone tried to emulate this with the Leeds pedal ? Is it good for clean sounds ?

I honestly think the Oxford runs completely over the Leeds pedal. It seems to have better overdrive and bite.

I know he used a Hiwatt, but I was able to dial in a really good John Wetton "Red" tone(with my Ric, of all things) within minutes of owning this pedal. I tried the same thing with the Leeds when I owned it, but the high end bite is just not there.

The Leeds sounds dull by comparison.

I could definitely be wrong about how close those settings were, but the treble was definitely just as much or more than the Oxford's(my strings are 4 years old, so that's probably why I have to dial in a little more treble - the Ric kinda makes up for some of it)

But I can tell you this - I could never get the top-end grind I love so much from that thing. If I turned up the treble it would sound unnatural and too airy, whereas the Oxford could have this awesome "dirty" top-end crunch - it is so much more aggressive in the highs.

This guy gave a much better explanation than I can, and his review is what tempted me to trade up my Leeds for the Oxford:

I'm not bashing the Leeds honestly, but it definitely sounds much more polite and less aggressive.

Here's the settings I used on the Oxford, on the first soloed clip and the one in the mix:

Oh, I'm not disputing that if you leave the settings the same between the Oxford and the Leeds, that the Leeds sounds darker. I'm just saying that you CAN get brighter sounds out of the Leeds. Also, I tended to run my Leeds with the drive much lower (usually around 9:00), and the character higher (1-3:00). I found that to make the Leeds more clanky and spanky.

Oh, it definitely will - but I started to feel like the sound was off in a cave and too tinny after going too far with the character knob - I kinda feel that way with a few of their character pedals.

You ever plug a distortion box into the Leeds? I felt it(and the Oxford) sounded awesome that way.
