tell me about Super Ferrite pickups...need info...

I know they're in different positions, but how similar would say these sound to the humbucker size SF's in your other bass? Routing a jazz bass for some Peavey SF has been on my want-to-do list for a while but these seem like a better option that'll also support a cool pickup maker.

Hello. The coil for the Jazz size is the same as factory SF. The only difference is the magnets used for the J sized pickups are the magnets are a little smaller to fit in the cover. Not having access to factory SF mounting screws lead to some investigation work. From what I can tell based on pictures and measurements the factory pickup mounting screws are #4 x 1 1/4 Thread Forming screws for plastic. As far as screws go these are kinda spendy with $10 shipping. Only place I found the proper length was go old McMaster Carr. Stainless versions are in the mail should be able to confirm in a few days.

Finished up on this coil for a factory reproduction SF with the 3D print cover. Just wanted to show everyone what will be under the backplate of the cover so no one has to wonder. With the report the lead wire will be Mogami 3 connect. Silver is the Shield. Colored wire is Hot and Clear wire is Negative. Single pickup sales will be South Up. If a set is ordered they will be South bridge North Neck just in case bass wiring needs them to work together like guitar. Blade is US steel. Connections are made with audio Silver Solder. Coil wound with US single poly nylon magnet wire. Pickup has full shielding around coil. Same as factory size magnets. Final Ohm readings are 5.25k

I'm still trying to figure out how to post all of the sound samples that @GarrettCampbell recorded, but we do officially have side by side audio clip comparisons of how my stock '85 Peavey Super Ferrites, the 916 Super Ferrite prototype with pole pieces, the 916 in-line humcancelling Super Ferrites (in original Peavey shells - spoiler alert - I think these sound super good/close to the originals), and @Matt Kustom's new 916 Super Neo prototypes sound - fingerstyle, slap and pick. Please stay tuned...we are close!

I currently am using Duncan Jazz Stack V bridge pickup in my main fretless as I generally just use the bridge.

Post #162 shows the insides of the split SF. I can answer any questions you have. A stacked version would be possible if the correct size steel was available but it's not. To fit a stacked on the blade the wire size would have to change. The ohm readings would be much different than 5k

So, I'm going to help @Matt Kustom get these clips a little more side-to-side comparison friendly over the next few days, but, here are all of @GarrettCampbell's sound clips of the four different pickup sets I have: my stock '85 Peavey Super Ferrites (the control), 916 Super Ferrites, 916 In-line Humcancelling Super Ferrites, and the new 916 Super Neos that I commissioned Matt to design and build.

The clips are located on the 916 site here. Please listen through a good set of speakers/headphones.

Garrett's methodology was as follows: We decided to do the same riff, first finger style, then slap, then with a pick. First neck pickup solo, then bridge pickup solo, then both pickups on. First tone all the way up, then tone all the way down. 6 clips in all for each pickup set per style (finger, slap, and pick).

To me, all 916 versions have a bit more in the mids and sound a bit brighter, while the stock pickup pickups seem to have a bit more low mid heft (though could just be the amplified highs making it seem that way). The split coils in particular seem to have a the most similar-to-stock high end, but don't feel as punchy in the low mids.

Some of the clips seem mislabeled to me. The stock Peavey both pickups pick style clips definitely sounds slapped.

Edit: Maybe I'm crazy but all the stock Peavey finger style clips sounds like both pickups to me.

Actually, ALL the stock Peavey clips sound like both in all examples. They've all got that j bass scooped thing going on. Compared the the very obvious difference between the soloed pickups in the 916 examples.

I'm going to be working with @Matt Kustom to clean up the clips in the next couple weeks. We just wanted to get them up there so people could start listening...thank you for the feedback @primussucks9126 and I will update folks when these are corrected!

I am also going to get @GarrettCampbell, who played/recorded all the clips, to weigh in with his feedback soon. For what it is worth, I loaded the 916 Super Ferrite prototype with the pole pieces into Sedona Lee as her final pickup set. That said, I'm super happy with the results of the split coil and the Neos. Other 916 SF pickup owners, how do you feel about the mids in your pickups compared to stock? I'm curious. Thanks!

If I had to guess why there is a difference in sound it would be the metal used in each pickup Peavey vs 916. The blade in the peavey looks to be a offshore piece. It has the same look as the stuff from the usual suspects. At 916 we use U.S. steel whenever possible. Even if we have to cut and plate in house. The steel blade used in the SF recreations is U.S. certified 1018. With offshore metal who knows what it is. Some old bike frames , whatever was laying around the trash pile to be melted into new material.

Love this thread. Just got a peavey t20 yesterday, 1981. Today I looked under the pickguard and pickup is huge underneath, like the size of a mudbucker. Does anyone know about that version of the ferrites? Also something I’m noticing on this bass is that the E string when plucked up with my finger isn’t as loud as when it’s plucked down with my thumb, so I guess the angle of the pickup isn’t giving the E string enough room to vibrate over the magnet

You have the angel mount pickup? If you are experiencing string fall off and have tried height adjustment , etc and still have the issue we can make a full custom pickup to solve the issue. It requires a custom cut exposed blade. Did this with a Bass recently that had the same issue

May look into it for sure. Have you seen the early ferrite with the big underside? i think they were in some of the early furys too with the angled pickup.
